Well those wheels look great ... "mind if I ask" ... is it an alloy centre mounted inside a carbon rim and can you see the fibre weave in the carbon section or is it painted over ...

Whiteski,,, well yes it`s 2x carbon fibre/kevlar composite outer half rims with CNC machined billett alloy centers that all bolt together (3 piece),,, the outer rim halves are made using hi-tech new fandangled Nylon resin & no you can`t see fibre mesh as you would normally within a carbon fibre panel.

Matt,
Is there any reason you put the motor so far out in front of the wheels?
Is it just to aid front end grip?

I would have thought it would have a considerable negative effect on high speed balance in a car so light with little in the way of aerodynamic down force. :?

Nice work by the way. :D

Mason , yeah it did, but i tossed it away straight after racking my nuts on it when my foot slipped off the pedal one day,,, I just jammed it into 2nd gear after that, with a nail through the change mech in the rear hub :-)

77clubbyVan,,, yeah well there`s actually 4 reasons why the donk is so far forward in the buggy,,, one is that there`s no room left behind there to slip it back any further & 2ndly because the axles are pretty straight as they are now & any further back would make it all yukky & suck power,,, & 3rdly because i`m a tight arse & didn`t want to spend any more money that i already have, so i didn`t make up some eleborate drive mech nor did i buy a quaife type gearbox with reverse gear etc,,, 4thly i just figured that with it a little forward like that the weight transfer would be pretty good going back onto the drive wheels slightly behind

It`s really not that far forward actually, just a tad more than a std mini

& i will be making up an aero downforce package for sure, i`ve just bought all the alloy sheet for that last week :-)

But it will be just a sprint/hillclimb buggy,,, i can`t see me running it down conrod straight at Bathurst if you know what i mean? :-)

Hi MiniMan,

Just read this thread today. Great looking "buggy"...very similar to a Motorkhana "special".

Have you thought of setting up the rear brakes for a handbrake and giving motorkhanas a go? They're great fun.

BTW, how's the R1 mated to the Mini drive-shafts? Is there a chain drive to a Mini diff?

Cheers,

Dave[/img]

Hi Dave, & yes it`s all set up with a "Fiddle Brake" (4th pedal) for motorkhanas already,,, I did my first motorkhana when i was about 7 years old & been doing them ever since ,,, & as far as we can tell CAMS actually brought in the 14year age limit because of me :-)

Reverse gear is only an electric starter motor set up to the Chain drive assy at the moment so it won`t be very competitive in reversing events, so it`s more of a hillclimb special really, but i will do street & circuit sprints , autocross & drags as well , if they let me that is :-)

cheers
Matt
