Sounds like may be a handbrake warning light switch ... fitted to late clubmans.

If so, there should be a square warning light in the dash padding...

It' been a while since I've had a late clubman...

but if memory serves there is "tab" that sticks out from the side of the handbrake lever... and a corresponding bracket bolted to the floor in which the switch should push into...
The tab would then push againt the switch turning on or off appropriately.

You should be able to test the switch to see if it works just by pushing in and out. (with igintion on)( ? may have to earth it against something metal ?)

But short answer - don't need it - all it does is light up the warning light.
