A bit of a story,

Drove my car from parents house to my place the other day, 35 odd k of twisty road and a few straights, i was giving it a bit of stick!

anyway, 2k from home, i enter town, i smell a bit of oil, oh well. slow down to 50k....blue smoke! ah oh! then came the loud knock....oops.

The engine is 85000ish km old, never rebuilt, its had a headgasket, thats it. It was in a austin 1300, 1 old lady owner car :D

i thought to myself, bugger, ive killed it, time to sort the 998 out. so i kept driving.

When i got home, the knock was bad, there was smoke coming out of the grille from the engine breathers, and the water had clearly emptied itself. i let it cool for 10min, but still somke, so i hose'd it  for fear of fire, all the grease and remaining paint came off....

i thought i was done for.....

i left it.....

went back the next morning, usual puf of blue on startup, idles fine, knock gone, hmmmmmm.

drive away, no knock under load, went for a drive, seems good

drove to work today and its perfect...back to normal

what a little legend this lump is!!!!

Moral of the story... CHECK THE WATER

Very lucky

Normally thats enough to burn and glaze the rings. No compression, which means no vaccuum to suck in the fuel and then, even if it starts, it has a morbid fear of anything but downhill.

mine did that in december 2006 - spat all the water out and started pinging on the way home, all the oil and crap burnt off the head, and the paint changed colour!

14 months later I'm rebuilding it.... and putting on a new heater tap

When ID10CY spat a Core plug last week it was much the same. No 2 son kept driving it and when he got home it was knocking, smoking, wouldn't turn off etc. I got him to stall it and told him not to put water anywhere near it. A few hours later I went down and filled up :?: well attempted to fill up the radiator and found the Middle Plug was missing.

Put the new plug in yesterday (I'll do the rest when I can wrestle car back from no 2 Son) and it runs like a charm again. No smoke, no knock, doesn't leak or use water.

You gotta love Cast Iron...... If it had an alloy head

Cheers,

Dicko.

:( Maybe not so strong......

Did not go last night aparently, went to have a look this afternoon, starts every now and then, runs on somewhere between 1 and 2 cylinders, and if so it's for a very short time.

Suspect Head Gasket but won't know till No 2 gets it home, somehow.

EDIT: Update on ID10CY's original 998. Pulled it apart today after getting home S#!**^ because couldn't get it going on the side of the road. What a Mess

No 1 B/E Bearing has spun on crank, and eventually fused itself to the Con Rod. Broken tooth on Idler Gear (Drop Gears) which explains the piece I found on the Sump Plug. I'll post pic's once I find my camera, I think No3 Son has that one :?

Cheers

Dicko
