The H stands for Horizontal. SUs used to come in updraft or was that downdraft? configurations back when moons were blue.
Looking at the pic of the HIF carb it appears to have only 2 diagonally placed mounting studs which IIRC would make it a HIF 38 or HIF 4. I think the HIF 44 might have 4 mounting studs. I may be wrong since I've not had much to do with HIF types, but I can't see any reason why they wouldn't follow the same stud layout as HS types.

alright then whats the difference between a HIF44 and a HIF 4?
The throttle body has 4 holes but the manifold only has 2 diagonally opposed bolts.

A HIF-4 is a 1½" carby, they became the HIF38 (38mm)
The HIF-44 is 44mm or 1¾" (previously the HIF-6)

A friend is having trouble keeping O Rings up to his HIF44 = HIF-6...the first thing I thought of was the change to ULP and higher Toluene content attacking both the O Rings.

Has anybody else had this problem?? and could it be alleviated by wet assembling with a good goop with/or even, without the O Rings!)
