Surely you could set up a video camera so that we could sit and watch 24 hours a day. It would be enthralling to watch as once every hour a little bubble might hit the surface and burst its way to freedom. Keep up the good work!

Well after 1 day there is not much to see. The vinegar is bubbling away and slowly changing from brown vinegar to rust coloured vinegar.

It does not look like there has been much of a difference but all the loose stuff has gone and it is starting to eat into the rust.

So we will see how it looks tomorrow.

OK Morris let me guess - you're looking for the cheapest rust removal product on the market ?
I am not looking for the cheapest rust removal product, I am just showing an easy way to clean rust of metal and to loosen rusted bolts. ( I am a tightarse but that is not the reason for the experiment!)

I will clean up the other half of the clamp with molasses, that is going to be the part 2 of this experiment. (there may be a part 3)

If you want it to rust quickly you just take it out of the vinegar and leave it an hour. It changes colour while you watch.

To be honest, why? I bought this stuff called EvapoRust, although there may be similar products in Aus. It's about NZ$50 for five litres, environmentally friendly, more or less odourless and reusable. You soak the part for 24 hours, the rust is gone and the part is protected against rust for weeks.

I mean, unless you get a load of vinegar for free, I can't see it being effective or cost-effective. Although I should add, interesting to see the effect of vinegar or coke - kind of like a low budget mythbusters episode :)

I'll do a test tomorrow if I can, and post the results.

Coke would work because it's got phosphoric acid in it = that is what is in all the 'Rust Converters' on the market. I always look for the cheapest with the highest concentration of H2PO4 Coke would not be that cheap and you can't drink it afterward

Morris, not too late to sneak the vinegar back in mum's pantry. Quit while your'e in front, old son.

Vinegar (acetic acid) is a very weak acid. Only 1-5% ionization compared to in-organic acids (hydrochloric, sulphuric) which are 100% ionized. But these attack the metal, not just the rust, as we know, so something less potent needed.
