Come on Al, how about stumping up some special ausmini member's only prices for that evil fizzy stuff you peddle? :)

Well after 1 day there is not much to see. The vinegar is bubbling away and slowly changing from brown vinegar to rust coloured vinegar.

So we will see how it looks tomorrow.

Morris, not too late to sneak the vinegar back in mum's pantry. Quit while your'e in front, old son.

Vinegar (acetic acid) is a very weak acid. Only 1-5% ionization compared to in-organic acids (hydrochloric, sulphuric) which are 100% ionized. But these attack the metal, not just the rust, as we know, so something less potent needed.

Retail Vinegar is 4% Acetic acid. Industrial is 10%. Some eastern european cultures like concentrations on retail up to about 12%

We make it at 12%, then filter it and dilute back to 10 or 4% depending on whether its intended for retail or industrial.

Now if you want strong acetic acid get 'Strong Acetic Acid BP' (Pharmaceutical standard) = 33.3% or Glacial Acetic Acid =99% pure

Day two and it it starting to make a difference, there are some bits of bare metal. The bolt is still stuck though.

I know that vinegar is a weak acid, that is one of the reasons for using it. From what I have found in the past the vinegar has good penetrating properties.

I use hydrochloric acid at work to wash my truck. That is what I am going to use in part 3 of this experiment. It is great for cleaning concrete off a truck and it also removes surface rust very quickly. (to be replaced by a fresh coat of surface rust in about an hour. )

Old school panel beaters use phosphoric acid and HCL on a regular basis to quickly remove rust.

Phosphoric acid works well on alloy wheels as a cleaner as well.

But in both cases its a wipe on - wait - wash off - not something you leave for a week.

If you give a girl enough red wine it has great penetrating properties.

Have you tried the vinegar with a 9v battery running across the vinegar to the metal ?

He can't - because unless the batteries are Eveready, they get tired too quickly with all that running.

I would have thought that that is a next stage - once the rusting has been dissolved away and the frozen bolt freed then electrophoretic replacement of the pitting can be done.

I've found HCL can leave salts in the pores of some steels, causing rust to re-appear later. Not good :(

Phosphoric acid is nasty stuff....whack some rubber gloves on and think about eye protection if you are going to be splashing the stuff about
