You said earlier that there was the number stamped above the shroud , are there two holes on the shroud below the number where the ID plate could have been ? A lot of UK 850's had a stretched oval shaped plate there with the number above it on the inner guard .

As for the gutter holes , the first 850's bought into Australia in knock down form (panels) had the UK body features including a cut in the gutters to let the water out , later Australian ones had holes drilled in the corner instead . UK mini's kept the cut holes for a lot longer in there production .

A UK made mini of unkown quantity I'm affraid , hopefully some of our Kiwi members will be able to tell more as they got UK 850's new (I think) , maybe they can draw something from the body number . Presumably 850 but no idea whether it's a Morris or an Austin at this stage . Put some photo's up and some of the others might recognise something .

Sounds like it is something unique. A bit of time and patience we may be able sort it out

with an FE number, it's an english production car - my traveller is FE855***, was built on 3rd April 1965, and I'd say your car is about 18 months earlier than that...

with that FE number, you can get a heritage certificate that gives you all of the original details, engine number, colour, production date, who the dealer was.... less than $100 with the current exchange rate

Sounds like an early English 850 (Not cooper or S) based shell, good find!

unfortunately the FE number was used to identify major components that are later joined to make a complete car .. and they're not recorded in the factory databases. My own S has two FE numbers.

However, UK cars do have a permanent number that can be used to identify a car. Its on a small metal plate spot welded to the bonnet slam panel just on the drivers side of the latch mechanism. Mine starts with an "A". The plate is quite small and thin and the number is usually hidden under paint.

Using it you can get a Heritage certificate which will tell you the model, age, engine and chassis numbers, colour(s) and maybe a few other bits and bobs. Unfortunately a Heritage Certificate is not cheap these days.

Good luck, Ian

Yep, FE numbers are on UK cars, my S has one above the rad cowl and one on the drivers floorpan, rumoured to mean Front End.

I do know someone who can give an approx build date from these, but as has been said, heritage cannot trace based on FE.

What about other features of car, gearlever cut out position? Full front panel? Body number as stated above?? ^^^
