A friend of mine had a 1098 Sprite motor rebuilt a few years ago by someone (who shall remain nameless), they managed to block the bypass valve to sump drain hole by trying to drill out that little brass plug below the bypass.
Anyway, long story short- it got to about 160psi before the Fram spin-on filter blew the seal out.
I've never had a problem with spin-ons, and I've used everything from cheap and cheerful to UK made Coopers and Oz Ryco.
Like M1100, I always do it up by hand then give it ~1/4 turn with a filter clamp until tight.
