Have just taken out the mechanical fuel pump that wasn't connected and originally had the intention of adding a breather to the pump hole cover plate before I put it on. However while skinning my knuckles undoing the pump I noticed one of the tappet cover plates has a breather tube - about 10" long that has the end crimped. Is this ventilating the same area as the pump hole? Would I be better off using the existing tube rather than trying to provide one on the pump cover plate?

I would throw away that crimped POS and get the late Clubbie one (same as an S) with the oil trap on it.
I made up a breather for the pump hole once on my 1275, connected it to the PCV valve. OK while running in.. but once over 4,500 rpm the crank threw a solid stream of oil at it, and the car made like James Bond! :x
So I scrubbed that idea- & fitted one to the flywheel housing.

Hey Doc the cattle dog shows the plate with the oil cannister has a breather hose connecting it to the carby. Would you do that or just let it vent to the air through a filter?

The late 998 Clubbie did have it connected to the vac port on the side of the carb. If your carb has it, use it. Otherwise I'd either fit a Cooper S/1100S `Smiths' PCV to the manifold, or just run it to a breather can like I do now.

some of those breather (pong box) canisters "DON`T" have gauze in them,,,YUK!!!

the early original canisters had gauze, "GOOD" ,,,However they are Prone to breaking up & falling out after years & years , but if it`s still good then use it,,,

if it`s all falling out then definately don`t use it as steel gauze falling inside your engine is not really a good thing :-)

if the fuel pump hole type breather canister is pumping oil up, then it probly hasn`t got the oil catching quallities of the steel gauze in it,,,some people (including my dad) had oppted for 2 of the canisters bolted together (one upside down to the other) to help stop oil pumping up ,,,i reckon that`s YUK,,, just one that`s in good nick with steel gauze that`s not all breaking up & falling out "should" be good enough

but,,,if you have a side cover plate with breather canister, then just use that & plate off the fuel pump hole

easy-peasy :-)

Hey Matt if you can get the gauze out (or it doesn't have it) will stainless steel pot scourers do the job?

I'll answer for him... YES! Good mod, did it on mine.
It was easy to get out after I cut the pipe off.. :P I was converting it into a flywheel housing mounted one anyway.

Just found a rocker cover with the breather bit on it and thanks to Ty I now have a clubbie style tappet cover with breather can on it. Any point in using both? I have a plain Bing chrome rocker cover I was intending to use so I could save the vented cover for the next project.

On 1275s you need at least 2 breathers IMO. 2 on smaller motors won't hurt either.

I ran a recoed 1275 with one breather from the rocker cover, big mistake. Oil would spit out of the dip stick hole if thrashed hard or driven over 120kph. Doc is right at least two breathers should be put on any A series.

On my 1310 I've got a 3/8" hose from the rocker cover, another from the flywheel housing- both into a 1L vented bottle. No problems now at 7500+ around Wakefield Pk. :P
Have got bugger all in the bottle in over 2 years. And no oil leaks from seals either.
