ahoy there chaps and chapettes
Looking at getting my wheels powder coated, can anyone enlighten me on the process, or things i have to do before i take them to a coater (besides take the tyres off) At the moment they are that non metal silver colour (eg new mini mag finish) will that matter?
AND can anyone give me an approx price, time it takes and a good company to use in the melbourne area.

Clean any grease and crap off em. Otherwise just take em in and they will blast em and powdercoat them. Ive heards of guys getting rims done for like $40-$50 a rim.

Mistake I did was get them powder coted then found I should have had them checked , trued up/straightened before hand

The issue was the baking process - either too hot or for too long , or both.

They were sandblasted before being powdercoated.
There is a topic on here somewhere about them.

edit: the front faces are fine, its the rears of the wheels that were affected.

I was told that you shouldnt get your wheels powdercoated, as the coating cracks around the bolts holes when the wheels are tightened.

The cracking leads to moisture getting in behind the coating and the resultant corrosion with the alloy will left the powdercoating further.

2-pak paint was the best I am told.....

Tyres off & sandblasted first (unless they have blasting facilities)

Got mine done cheap $100 for all 5, not including blasting.
I used a round file in the lug holes to file the coating a bit thinner - no flaking

If the material is porous, like cast alloy is (especially old gravity cast cf die cast) then you have to bake out the gasses and absorbed liquids in the metal before you powder coat them. Otherwise they'll end up like willy's.

Not all powdercoats are created equal. A good place can tailor the hardness of the coat so that is is not so soft it peels like an acrylic paint and not so hard it chips like an enamel bath. My steel wheels were powdercoated and the finish has lasted very well but it is very hard and has cracked at the dish to cylinder joins between the welds. I saw one of those USA hot rod shows where they powdercoated the entire underbody of a unitary construction car. Just chose a flexible coat.

Some people say not to powdercoat due to the temp affecting the metal. This is only valid for high strength heat treated alloys, not the materials used for wheels.

Sorry to revive an oldish thread.... I have a question about powdercoating and am hopeing someone will know the answer, are you able to powder coat over bog? Or does it have to be just steel?

Probably not, during the process the temp gets up to around or over 200 degrees, the bog would'nt be able to cope with those sort of temps.

Get them Zinc plated first . Tell the platers that you are getting them Powdercoated and he will adjust the plating thickness. , that is if they are steel rims.
This will also strip the paint, and thr coater will prebake before coating. I have had 5 sets of rims done, excellent finish, $15 plate, $20 coat.
