a weber is effectively two carbs in the one body by that theory so each barrel wouls suffer from your suckworthy theory too

true, but not quote, a weber doesn't have a piston that goes up and down, the fuel flows down, instead of up so has gravity on it's side, it has a constant bleed as well as the jet.....

Ther is a reason why BMC used twin 1 1/4" SU's on their performance cars.
They spent millions of dollars on R&D to come up with this package.
Obviously if a single carb was better they would have done it?
BMC - millions of dollars in R&D - doubt it

HIF SU's weren't around in the days of the Abingdon competition department, so they wouldn't have seen the benefits from there, and I'd say there was a lot of "this has always worked, so why change it" thinking... and when did a factory ever produce the best they could out of a car - what makes more power, a factory Subaru WRX STi, or a standard WRX off the showroom floor with $15,000 spent on performance modifications. They were working on 6 cylinder motors as well, which would definitely benefit from twins over a single - or closer to the mark it's 2 singles, the triumph we have has twin HIF44's, and there's no balance pipe at all.
I reckon you can tell there's something wrong with the mini set up by thinking about the need for a balance pipe in the first place - it's there to keep up air flow, and give each port access to a tiny bit more carb inlet, probably makes 1 1/4" up to 1 3/8", the better the balance pipe, the more extra intake... but design a system with no need for a compensator in the first place
another reason behind a big single is also to do with constant air flow, and how there's only ever one cylinder drawing fuel charge at a time anyway - so would you rather each piston have access to an 1 1/4" intake or a 1 3/4" air intake
I wish I had my own dyno, enough dosh to have a selection of carbs, inlet manifolds, needles, jets, springs and everything else, and I'd spend all day testing and testing to see the very best combinations with a particular objective in mind - I don't have that, so the best I've found is Vizard

anyone who wants to understand a bit more about mini performance needs to have a copy
