I'm aware that Mk2S Police engines had twin HS4s, Ramflo filters, some head work? and a sporty cam.
Can anybody here confirm the cam spec, I have heard from different people that it's either a C-AEA731 grind, or a Wade one? :?

I have a copy of the cams homologation papers for the police spec Clubman GT , I'll transcribe the cam details later for you . Not sure if it's the same as the mk2 s but at least it'd be close .

Hi Kev, I think you'll find it was Waggotts not Wade.

When I was looking at getting rid of the 286 I bought in England I spoke to a guy that used to work at Lynx back in the 60s. He reckoned I should chase up a "police grind". I rang Waggotts and the response was that "yep, we still do those".

Its in the Traveller now and still going fine. Somewhere I have the specs and installation instructions.. but its not falling to hand right now.

If I can find it I'll let you know....

Cheers, Ian

As I said before , I don't know how it relates to the cooper s mk2 but I wouldn't have thought it'd be much different considering they used mk 2 S motors (??) .

Thanks Ian, that last one looks to be a 731. I ran one for years in my old 1310.

No worries Kevin .

The 731 has always been my favourite cam and have had it in several engines , will have to have a look at an RE13 at some stage though .

For the NSW Police Clubman GT's the first six vehicles were fitted with C/AEA731 (pin and slot drive) and later vehicles with C/AEA800 (spider type drive) according to the BLMC service bulletin. The cams are the same except for the oil pump drive. Since MK II S's used the same engine it is reasonable to assume they used the same camshafts.

I've heard the stories about Wade and Waggott (and others) supplying "special police grind" cams but since these were fitted on the production line and not by the Police workshop it is possible (likely?) they were the genuine factory BLMC Special Tuning camshafts. Other Special Tuning bits used on Police engines were outer and inner valve springs (C-AEA524 and C-AEA652 respectively) and locating collar (C-AEA654) according to the factory bulletin.

Here's the ST Camshaft data:

Thanks for the info.

<edit>Police Mk2s didn't go too bad back in `69, they were good for 106MPH downhill. So Mr Plod told me when he finally caught up, in Bulahdelah...

Has anyone else seen the 'Police Cooper S' for sale in the West on eBay? From what I can see it looks very neat

The Waggott chart is very interesting, and confusing. They list a Std Cooper S (233), Police Pursuit (509), 731 factory (235), 544 factory (238) and 648 factory (239) but none of the specifications line up with the BLMC factory figures for the equivalent camshafts.
Why is this? I'm assuming it has nothing to do with the fact that the cams are reground and hence the lobes are smaller than original? Perhaps Waggott has 'improved' the originals and its remarks simply point to the nearest factory equivalent. Is the rocker ratio of 1.25 relevant?
Does anyone have a technical contact at Waggott who can answer this?

I've had my Ex-Police GT since 1977 and was told at the time that the difference from the standard GT was - 731 cam, gas flowed head, HS4's, Warnerford Paper Element Sports Filters and handbrake warning light. The engine mods were supposedly done and/or developed by Lynx. I would assume the MkII S would be the same. My GT didn't have the original engine in it so it's only hearsay.

a point to be remembered here is that Police Commands in certain regions might have started with Police Pack cars but it didn't end there...I am absolutely sure that certain Commands asked local BMC Dealers/Tuners to breathe on their pursuit cars
