It is pretty low but it is a bit of a lame excuse I mean they should have been able to think of something like driving it up on bricks etc.
I think the rubber cones in the front have compressed.

People also DO NOT know how to jack a Mini...thats why you get soccer ball sized humps in the front footwells!!

What we tend to do in the ACT Mini Car Club is spread the word.....don't think we are alone in doing this....all car clubs do....but ONLY if you have and continue to have good experiences with a particular repairer/service provider.

This of course is NO guarranty - as discussed in another thread.

We do tend to recommend the same places though....as long as the good reports keep coming in. The club also has sponsorship arrangements with certain suppliers.

If you find a good place...spread the word and encourage others to go there and SAY that were recommended by another Mini owner.

So it really just amounts to sometimes going out of your way to support a particular business who does the right thing.

Now ...as a for instance, dosen't John Leffler run a suspension business on the southside of Sydney?? He certainly knows Minis.....but, no eye deer what sort of work his shop puts out.

Easiest way.
Just make sure the dude knows which is toe-in and which is toe-out. Goodyear Tyre did my Fiat once- gave it 4mm toe-OUT! Rooted the tyres in a couple of weeks..

mini is meant to have 1.587mm toe out...

here's the procedure from the manual (apparently no good for a clubman)

1/ with the car on a level floor, turn the wheels to a straight ahead position, pump up the tyres to the recommended pressure, check both tie rods are the same overall length

2/ make a mark on the inside wall of each tyre 184.150mm (7.25") from the wheel centre and 238.76mm (9.4") from the floor surface, in front of the wheel centres. Using a bar type aligning guage, take a measurement between these marks

3/ roll the car forward approx half a wheel turn to bring the marks the same distance from the floor surface, but to the rear of the wheel centres. Again, using the aligning guage take a measurement between the marks. If the alignment is correct, the first measurement should be greater than the second by 1.587mm (0.0625").

4/ if the alignment is incorrect, release the lock-nuts at the tie rod ball joints and turn each tie-rod an equal amount in the required direction and retighten the lock nuts, recheck the alignment

to do it for a clubbie, make sure that there is about 19mm between the tyre and the tie bar at full lock, otherwise it's basically the same

SO THERE! :P

I want to know how one used to do it before computers and wheel alignment voodoo magic!

Besides, I am that close to new wheels and tyres, who cares about alignment? I shouldn't be driving my car as is, to quote Gafmo and the Doc

There were mechanical aligners. I can't remember what they were called but it always seemed to me that to operate it required voodoo and magic. Then of course string and chalk was a good fall back. I recall seeing advertised a device that was driven over and it calculated the toe. It was pommy of course.

Good info Kev, what a good idea those toe plates are. Would work, make them yourself, length to be the diameter of your tyre. Easy. Best idea of the month. Steve

They need to be concave at the bottom to clear the bulge of the (radial) tyre. 8)

John Leffler at St george steering is probably the best person to do a wheel alignment on a mini in sydney. He uses all the original equipment, no mumbo jumbo computer stuff. Last time i went to him he just finished doing a wheel alignment on an AC Cobra and was about to start on a Aston Martin. But he wanted to do the mini so the aston had to wait! Great guy.
Cheers

Aaron

I went to a great guy at Fairfield called Rex Stafford. Had the old fashioned machines, used to own a mini etc etc. Did an awesome job, with no computer bullshit.

Beware of any place with computers, and a waiting room with a palm tree. They will take your money and stuff your pride and joy. Most of the big chain stores (Bob Jane, Beaurepaires etc) will actually do a wheel alignment on your car even if there's a fault somewhere in the front end!!

The first things this guy did were take it for a test drive with me in the car, then put it up on the hoist to make sure everything was sweet. THEN aligned the wheels, took it for another test drive and checked it all over again. I've motorkhana'ed the car and I'm not real nice to it, but all still seems to be well!!

All this and he still charges less than a chain store who will just let the apprentice loose with a computer aligner which probably desn't fit the 10" or 12" wheels anyway!!!

Just my 2 cents
(any probably still not worth that much!!!!)
