ok have to put my 2 cents in cause i'm on the other side of the fence with this one
i work at one of those tyre places and i just wanna straigten somethin up for the rest of ya
in order to do a PROPER wheel alignment the car is normally put up on a four post hoist and sat on turntables, not sure how much you all know about hoists but with a four poster hoist you have to drive the car up onto the hoist, so the car being to low wouldn't mean that they couldn't find somewhere to jack it up onto would mean that the car wouldn't clear the entry ramps to the hoist or possible the jacking beams.
We used to have this problem occasionally with our old hoist as the jacking beams ran lengthwise and if a car was to low it wouldn't clear the jacking beams
with our new hoist we don't have this problem as the entry ramps arn't as steep and the jacking beams run width wise so they can be moved to the front of the hoist to allow the car to clear them
sorry but had to say that cause i can't stand people standing there hanging crap on these places when they have no idea what so ever on what is involved with a wheel alignment

To do a wheel alignment properly the car MUST be level and you can't get a car level on a four post hoist! (you can get it close!)

Watch how the race team do their alignments..... With bits of string and tape measures! (and the car on a surface plate)

sorry if this sounds personal but where do you work?
are you a mechanic or underbody tech? maybe a hoist service technician?
cause you might wanna check on the truth behind what you said about the hoists
yeah some four poster hoists arn't level... if they arn't installed right !!
i think you will find that with most of them on the safety latches they are perfectly level
considering they line them up with a spirit level and all
but you already knew that right?

Ray Revell was my aunts brother. Todays trivia brought to you today by a 1992 Mini's Need for a wheel alignment.

Just got a brand new set of 165 60 12s on the cooper & the wheel alignment man said go away and return when you have fixed the wheel bearings. BUMMER.
Many thanks to Warrren in Fyshwick for haveing wheel bearings for a 92 mini in stock on a Sat morning. Now I can keep my apointment to have the wheel alignment tomorrow at 3:30.
BTW it was a ning nong of a job. But now its done.
PS If you need somthing to tap the seals & races in the aluminium spacer from a clubman fan is PERFECT

Regards Paul

Not Ian,
I had the Tyres fitted by the wheel Factory in QBN, good guys. First thing on Sat Morning & had thewheel alignment booked for Mon around the corner at Inline steering. while the car was in the air on Sat the bloke from Inline happened to be at the tyre shop so he had a look at the car & notice the wheel bearings were shot (or at least there was play in the hub & with CORRECT tourque there shoud't be) so Angus & I zoomed down to FIshwick & picked up a full set for the front. They come in matched sets & therfore are quite a bit dearer that bearings for a Holden. But I was glad I could get them at the time.
So sunday was spent learning how to disasemble & reasemble swivel hubs for 8.4' disks.
Sposed to have 150FT/Pnds on the outside hub nut. Mine WERE FINGER TIGHT. This maybe why the hubs were lose. but now I have neew Bearings.
All good now.

Werw! my little post re: wheel alignment has turned into a monster!

Thanks for all the info. Last time I checked you need to do those wheel hut nuts tight as a chinese businessman's mother in law. I mean breaker bar tight...
