The speedo on the LS has gone on the blink again. It did it about 12 months ago where the needle would waver all over the place, then would not go over the 60Klm mark until it would stop all together.

I tried fitting a new inner cable when it happened earlier but it was way to long so I put the old one back in and it worked for quite awhile, until now where the speedo won't work at all. I took the inner cable out and re-fitted it but still a no go.

So I am wondering if it might be the speedo drive gear in the gearbox that is the problem and if so, can it be fixed without pulling the motor apart?

Hello fellow FNQ'er, unlikely to be the actual speedo drive gears in the gearbox but "might" be the square section bit of the drive spindle in the gearbox that the inner cable goes into, or, the square end of inner cable not being so square, or, a combination of both. Check the other end too.

Have seen the drive spindles out of shape so won't turn the cable. Otherwise it is the cable or in the speedo itself. Good luck with it.

justminis, thanks for the reply. When I took the inner cable out, the end that goes into the gearbox was flat not squared.

And if I disconnect the whole cable from behind the speedo, jack up the car (and put it on stands of course), start the motor and put it in gear I can see that the inner cable is not turning so it just might be the old inner cable after all?

OK, might be time to replace the cable. Can't beat new but I would most likely have a SH one here, will need to know the length tho.

yep replace the whole spedo cable not just the inner. Remember to ask for a Clubby one

I had a similar prob with one of my mini's - the speedo was very jumpy. What I did was pull the cluster out. Disconnect the speedo cable from the back of the cluster and pull out the cable from the insulated cover. Then apply a light smear of grease along the length of the cable and re-insert. This didn't entirely fix my problem but it did reduce it significantly.

Give it a go!

Don't grease the top 6" of cable... if it gets up in the speedo head, jumping will be the least of your problems.

Hey BC, good to see you are still around..

I have taken the old cable out and found that the gearbox end is flat, no square like it should be... I have ordered a complete new assembly so hopefully that should fix the problem..

Put in a complete new speedo cable today and the bugger still didn't work, so I pulled out the little speedo gear from the gearbox and found that it wasn't turning.

After cleaning it and and resetting it, it finally decided to play and now all is good. The speedo works, probably still not accurate but will test it against the GPS soon..

Yep, found that out with the new cable.. Flat not square like the old one.

Why my speedo wasn't working.. It wasn't the cable but the gear spinning on the shaft..

haha i just had the exact same problem.. some photos in my thread in the gallery section.

luckly i had a spare motor with a semi decent one in it.. popped it back in, connected the speedo back up and lo and behold, the speedo works!

lindsay @ www.minis.com.au has second hand ones for $15 he told me today, and i noticed steve @ brickworx has one on ebay for $30 which i presume is new. it looks a hell of a lot newer than yours and mine!

karcraft is out of stock til mid november.
