Hey guys im having idle problems with my mini. The minimum idle is around 1100, even went its fully warmed up. Even the idle screw is all the way off, it isnt even touching the throttle shaft thingy. After driving and stopping it sits at around 1400rpm and cant be lowered.

Also my acc cable is sticking, i got a new one and put it in and its still sticking. I was driving around the block and it got stuck at around 4000rpm   only was to lower it was to pull over and knock the throttle back.

Also when i switch the keys off the car continues to cough and sputter for around 3 seconds???

Any ideas?

Cheers

ive got the same problem as you at the moment, the only way ive found to stop it idling high when it sticks is to put my foot under the acc pedal and lift it up.

But im interested in what the answers might be.

if you need to life the accel to lower the revs, your accelerator cable is sticky somehwere. bit of lubrication should do the trick!

or a new cable. i dont think they are that dear.

EDIT: check your choke cable as well

Make sure you haven't got any really tight bends on the cable as it might be just binding up . Also make sure there isn't any carpet or soundproofing fibers in between the pedal and the stop or anywhere else .

A high idle can also be caused by an air leak in the carby.
If the throttle shaft is worn or there is a split in a gasket you will never get it to idle.

Theres no carpet near the top of the pedal and its returning to the same position.

How do i check for leaks?? Does the high rpm mean that it will continue sputtering after its switched off?

My carby needs tuning anyways so might take it somewhere to tune it up, might be running to rich or lean.

Even if the choke cable is not connected, the fast idle screw on the choke linkage could still be adjusted in too far, causing your fast idle.

Running on after you switch off the ignition can be caused by poor ignition timing.

Grab a can of Carb-R-Clean or something similar and spray it around the base of the carb and around the throttle shaft listen for an increase in revs.

Running on can be caused by a few different things. One of which could be a build up of carbon in the head. If i were you i would take it too an expert and get it tuned. If it is all running good then the running on problem will either disapear or gradually decrease.

i had similar high idle issues when i changed my carby. have you tried a different return spring. part of my issues were caused by that.

i tried two 'standard' springs from mini specialists and they stretched quite quickly. i've ended up with a spring from the hardware store, a good tune and no probs now.

good luck

I agree with everything above about your idle trouble.

Running a too hot spark plug could be the cause of your running on.

Try retarding your timing a little - mark your distributor position first. Check your mixtures too.

Try running your car on premium if you dont already.

Your engine is "dieseling" and most probably turning backwards. This isnt good for the motor so it get sorted out as soon as you can.

Did you replace the outer and the inner (the whole lot)? or did you just replace the cable without replacing the black outer bit?

I only replace them together.
