Harley, if I were you I would be starting to look for a Rover now. The longer you wait the harder it will be to find one.

Glad I bought mine when I did.

SC850... your parts supply is probably going to get better,
The problem lies at the cars i sell. I want them to be decent cars with nice interiors and dashboards... 88's were nice but plain, 89-91 cars were a lot better.
I have been talking to japan this morning and doubled the amount of cars we wanted so we get the nicer bits. It now takes two cars to make one good one.

Apparently all post 1989 Rover Minis will be put in Detention Centres :)

I'll volunteer to live in Japn or UK for the required time so that we can do private imports.

I wonder how many you can privately import at any one time.

Do you think they would notice one for every ausmini member :?:

Hi, I'm new to the forum, this is the first post I read.
I just thought that maybe somebody with a bit more background knowledge than I have could set up a petition http://www.petitiononline.com/petition.html. I'm sure that a lot more individuals in car clubs would be interested in signing a petition like this.

Definitely sounds like the way to go. After all the only reason they put these stupid rules in place is to stop the import of the vehicles that you can already buy here and people are importing equivalent models.

At least with minis we aren't doing that. We are importing them because we can't buy that type of car here.

I would definitely be interested in signing up and know many others that would do the same.

Yeah, I'm looking around a bit now. I've been trying brickworx to see what he has around at the moment, and the trading post has a few week in week out to keep a watch on. It;ll happen before august definetly.

As for a petition, could work. A lot of places are going to be affected by this change.
Looks like Oz Cooper might be stuffed.

Exactly. Like someone else mentioned, the only group benefiting from this is the government, and the people who have already imported the cars that were likely the catalyst for the law change.
Mutant mini, your car is beautiful. How long did everything take?

Harley as far as your concerned, wanting to buy a 1993 onwards Rover even before the new rule that brickworx has discussed here (which in reality only changes the fact that you can now only bring in 16 years or older minis not 15 years or older as before) was never going to be easy. The rules which changed the fact that you couldn't import and get complied the 1990"s minis has been around for a while. That's why places like Ozcooper and Glen Carpenter(Bris) and Northern Mini Parts (to name a few) haven't had any 1990's legitamately complied and registered minis for a while.

The rules that came in some time ago meant that the company which did the complying had to have their workshops fitted and check to a particular standard (as far as I understood). Not many if any, were prepared to spend the money to do this.

Ooops, just to clarify, the cars I meant as likely to have caused the changes to the laws are the turbocharged grey import skylines, Zs, Supras etc that were already released here in NA form.

here's a quote or two from the minister

Quote:
"Importers of these cars were using an exemption that allows hobbyists and enthusiasts to import classic and historic cars. This exemption exists as these vehicles generally perform low mileages and are limited in numbers, and therefore represent a minimal risk to overall Australian vehicle and safety goals.

"Without such an exemption, the private importation of these types of older, collectible cars would become uneconomic.

"The closure of this loophole will only apply to those vehicles which do not fit in the classic and historic category, thus preserving the ability of hobbyists and enthusiasts to obtain older classic cars and historic vehicles."

and

Quote:
Traditionally, popular models have included the Ford Mustang, the
Chevrolet Corvette, the Porsche 911, the Chevrolet BelAir and the
Chevrolet Camaro. These models have centred around vintages from the 1960s and
1950s. Many other classic models have also been imported under the scheme. These
types of vehicles will continue to be catered for under the new exemption.

hmm...

12) What consultation process was used?
In January 2004, the Department distributed a discussion paper, outlining the
proposed change and seeking comment. The paper was formally distributed to a wide
range of stakeholders. Since the release of the discussion paper, DOTARS has
received responses from stakeholders – some 737 submissions in total – from State
and Territory Governments, industry peak bodies, members of industry, and
individual importers and owners.

16) Where do I get information on vehicles entered on the Register of Specialist
and Enthusiast Vehicles?
Information regarding the Register is available from the RVCS website at http://rvcsprodweb.
dot.gov.au. The website provides a list of vehicles that are SEVS eligible,
and also a list of vehicles that have been ruled as not SEVS eligible.

http://rvcs-prodweb.dot.gov.au/sevs/sevsindex.htm

sorry guys, we don't own specialist or enthusiast vehicles :)

So, will rover minis fit into the hobbyist category or are we still stuffed?
