What thread is this? I've been to a few fastener shops and they can not help me.
Its 32 tpi which is close enough to 0.8 metric pitch, but the diameter is much smaller than anything I can find on my thread charts.
Anyone?

Years ago I purchased a big Qty of nuts, bolts Etc that fell on the floor when Minis were being Assembled, I will have a look and see if I can Locate some for You

Yeah I've dealt with BSA (British (Standards ) Association) although Steve is correct, they are generally called BA now. Pretty uncommon these days, seen a lot in old instrumentation. It's actually a metric thread based on mesurements relating to the meter.

Even so Mick the TPI diameter designation does not seem to correspond to the screw I have to replace.

Yeah, I'm not sure if the screw is or is not BA, but they are wierd to deal with. The TPI, thread pitch and spanner size (if required ) was based on the metric inside diameter of the screw. They were rather futuristic at the time pre-dating the metric system by decades.

The small diameter screw 0.138" x 32 tpi which holds on the nylon blockand the metal insert is what is called a number 6 x 32unc metal thread.
If you go to any good nut and bolt shop and ask for number 6/ 32 metal threads they will give you exactly what you need.
The larger catch plate screws are number 10/ 32 unf metal threads.

PS there are no BA threads on a classic Mini,
There is however one 1/4 BSF thread!!!! Anyone know where it is???

I was looking at the 6-32 unc but I think the major diameter is still larger than the old part that I have. I understand that it may be quite worn. I don't have the part with me today so I can't add anything more constructive to this discussion.
Having said this, metal cup that interacts with the nylon block is screwed on to the door using the same screws? I have noticed that these parts are spot welded on some minis.
Anyway I will follow up the 6-32unc lead, but if anyone happens to have some of these screws and is willing to help me out I would be greatful[/quote]

I retapped the hole for bolts I had on hand - can't remember what it was now but it worked

I was considering re-tapping the holes. Did you turn down the screw heads?
The original ones are quite small.

IIRC the long bolts holding Lucas Generators and Starter Motors together are 1/4" BSF.
There may be some BA threads in the speedo and other instruments as BA threads are used for small threads in instrumentation and electrical gear.
BA stands for British Association but it is in fact a metric thread.

32tpi is near as dammit (0.79375) to 0.8mm pitch.
If all else fails, just tap it out to M5. You can get a zillion head designs in M5 thread.
