The reversing lights were only on Clubman and Clubman GT cars initially. Some special order round noses had them but they were not standard. The Clubman Owners Handbook mentions that they had a special offset globe with 21W/21W filaments so that you couldn't put in a Tail/Stop globe but when I looked at the globe socket it didn't seem any different to the Tail/Stop socket that takes a 5W/21W globe. Not sure whats going on here. Anybody got any more info. This topic also came up on the Minimania board.

You are right about the socket, ordinary bulb fits but 21/21W bulbs were used. 5W is a bit dim for reversing...

<edit> It's the 1098 Clubbie and Clubman GT that got the reversing lights first I think. Twin filaments in the rear blinkers.[/quote]

Doc, only the Clubman GT first, as I have both cars and the 1098 (1972) does not have reversing lights.

Hi Anton,
Checked my 68 deluxe with a 1100 mini k engine in it.
The gearbox does have the reverse s/w fitted but its not wired up.I put a meter across the terminals of the s/w and it does work when rev selected.
This model did not have reverse lights fitted, therefore its not required for rego

If it's got the switch fitted, it's probably from an early Clubbie 1098. Same motor & box otherwise.

Hi Dr,
The engine in my mini is a 10YC/Ta/H.
This comes off a mini with a body number
of YMG2S1 which is a later model deluxe
with a 1100 motor in it.(according to my chart)
So your right again, its not off a mini K.
Rgds Felix

This thread has made quite interesting reading.....

In regard to clubby reverse lights and globes......I noted the globes in my clubby tail lights were 21w/21w. I thought this was a mistake and replaced them with 21w/5w. As the car is not running yet, I have no idea how the blinkers / reverse lights will look. It will be interesting......

Thanks all for the clarification on Mini K reverse lights, or the lack of!

OK,

Something I've been wanting to know for a while now, How do I fit a reverse light switch to my 68 deluxe?
The gearbox has a big bolt under the oil filter which the manual describes as a 'reverse detent plunger', and the gearbox is from a mini K (4sp synchro, remote shift).

What do I need to put in a switch, & will I need different rear lights? I want to keep the original two screw design if possible.

Cheers
Matt

Bring on rego for pops then!

heh heh. wait until you get other irrelevant rubbish like the one i got from the cop that pulled me over once....

cop smugly - "the wipers are stopped in the middle of the windscreen. i could defect you for your automatic park not working. it could dangerously block your vision"
me - "mate this is a 1966 mini minor. it cam with 2 speed wipers - on or off. they stop where they stop. lucky i put an aftermarket rear vision mirror on the door, it did not come with one of them either"
cop embarrassed - "well, um, stop them at the bottom of the windscreen in future"
me - "whatever"

Ausminiac you will need the following:
Reversing light sw - Part No AYB9194 (Lucas sw No34887)
Steel Plunger Part No 22G351 or AYB9195 - 3/16"dia, 0.515" long (33/64")
Lucas Australia 2 screw rear lamp bases with reversing light sockets - scarcer than hen's teeth. You can probably modify your existing ones by replacing the indicator socket with a twin filament stop/tail light socket from another base. Haven't tried it and you may end up with 2 stuffed bases.
An alternative is to wire up the reversing switch to the rear indicators with a pair of diodes at each rear indicator so that when the reversing lights are on the front indicators don't come on and when the indicators are on only RH or LH indicators flash and you don't get feed back to the opposite side through the reversing light wiring.
Electronic whiz needed here!
Remove reverse detent plug from front of gearbox. Be aware there is a big spring behind plug. Fit steel rod down through centre of spring. Screw in reversing sw in place of plug. Use new washer. Run wiring from "Ignition ON" A4 fuse to switch to rear indicators. It may be possible to wire in the diodes under the dash so you don't have to run the wiring all the way to the rear of the car. There is a junction between the front and rear wiring looms either under the dash or behind the LH trim. Not sure exactly where. Can't remember. KRAFT disease.
The Lucas switch number is quite old (30+ years) and may no longer be current and you can easily make a plunger from a piece of 3/16" dia steel rod.

Hope this gives you a start.
RonR
