anything you apply to stop it flashing off will be a real pia when it comes to painting time. I just cut the paint back and went over the exposed metal with a scotchbright pad everyday until I had it all the paint off and I was ready to prime it.

I just worked panel by panel. Removed old paint. Went over surface wirth 180 wet and dry paper (wet). Treated area with a deoxidiser solution. Rinse with water and dry and then paint within an hour with a Wattyl epoxy etch primer. This will seal for several months and can be overcoated with primer topcoat.

Hope thats a starting point.

The guy who beadblasted my shell for a restoration treated it with what he called "Keyphos" - the shell sat in bare metal without rusting for months whilst the various repairs were done prior to painting/priming.

I knew a guy who did a resto recently. He simply wet a rag down with petrol and wiped it liberally over the bare surfaces. It seemed to work well.

For the last few years I have been able to leave bare metal in the shed without any rust forming. The drought had a few advantages.

I'd use wax and grease remover. Wipe on, wipe off. Done! 8)

How do you get rid of the WD40 and petrol that will bleed out of seams and joins when you paint the primer on? :D

Etch primer has been working for me. I think that might be what 1310/71 is refering to with 'keyphos'.

I've had my shell sitting in por15 metal ready for some time and there's been no problems... Are you keeping your shell outside at all?? Also did you clean the surface with marine clean before using the metal ready? Any pics...

I'd stay away from using WD40 as it has silicone's in it and paint doesn't go well with silicone... you could always do one panel and then prime with an epoxy primer if that is easier
