I will be attempting to get the 850 going so i can make the drive in tomorrow night.

If anyone is on their way to the MCCNSW mtg tonight and feels they want to drop in for some amusement, give me a call 0419018670. i live literally 2 mins away from the meeting place.

OK almost 24 hours later and i have

New battery 440 CCA.
New coil, leads and condenser
i cleaned the earth strap for the engine
checked the dizzy and rotor button contacts, all clean, carbon contact is good
points are clean and correctly gapped
spark plugs are clean and correctly gapped
i checked that i have the leads to the right cylinders, anti clockwise ...yadah yadah

i filled the float bowl with fuel. i have cranked it enough that i see fuel in the filter.

the carby is the same one that i had on the engine when it was in the other car on a standard 1.25 in inlet manifold cut off from the exhaust. I did have headers and big exhaust on the engine in the other car. so the only difference is the exhaust is now cast standard manifold and peashooter pipe.

What am i missing? it was all running in the other car before i pulled it out :?

it cranks over fine, and i get a reasonable spark, not pulsar dizzy standard. fuel is going in because every now and then it backfires up the carby as i crank it. i played with the dizzy timing to see what difference it would make and nothing. it just does not want to kick on. so much for taking it to the drive in tonight. anyone got a spare mini needs a driver and are in between inner west and blacktown?

180 degrees out? did you actually check that #1 is at TDC when the rotor is pointing at #1 lead - if you did, chances are you got the top of the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke

"i checked that i have the leads to the right cylinders, anti clockwise ...yadah yadah"

Define this exactly. Is it possible (despite your confidence) that the plug leads aren't correct. when you say anti-clockwise - what firing order did you use?

OK no 1 TDC with valves closed. No 4 valves opening, obviously. Rotor button is where no 1 cylinder lead is. then anti clockwise 1-3-4-2. the coil lead is in the centre. like i said yadah yadah.....

i have had them in the wrong order on other occasions and the results were spectacular bangs from the exhaust. not seeing that this time.

what else :?: i can't think of anything else.

had the same problem with my wifes clubman,, ended up being that we set the dissy up tdc on the wrong stroke,, maybe try it on the other stroke and see what happes...

If your getting spark and fuel then it should be your timing or valve adjustment may be out.

thanks guys, but i am sure its not valves. how can that change just by lifting the engine out of one car and putting it back in another? This engine was running perfectly when i drove the car into the garage to do the swap. and apart from the manifold and exhaust, nothing has changed, until i could not start it and bought new bits listed previously.

i played with the timing a bit, advanced it, retarded it. still nothing. i have new gaskets on the manifold and carb. so there should be no leaks.

No way i can start it for the drive in now. it rained so i had to pack up everything. just as well, because it pissed down. could easily have filled the engine with water if i left the bonnet off

Sorry mick had i known and wernt moving i would have popped over and had a look see, i bet it is something really simple. You just need some one to stand next to you to make you feel stupid like i have done many times before. I am off work in about a week or so. if it isn't running by then i will pop over and see what we can do.

Cheers

Aaron

Did you change the Coil....to a GT40 R...a resistor Coil, without a Resistor

Not a great idea running these coils without resistor with points ignition- you will burn the points and probably overheat the coil.
OTOH they run fine like this with a Pulsar dizzy... 8)
