PM Watto on here and he should be able to help you out .

I have heard several versions of what it was over the years , it was only that Timbo correctly identified it over on the moke forum that I started digging .

   Babel fish translation of article ....

Quote:
" The mini Experience" is called the booklet from which I have made the summary for this Article. expenditure were more recently of jan. - mrt. 2009 (are possible we not doing; red.). but the piece proceeds the " Wilkes Antartic Station" in 1965. With thanks to Henk van Brakel and Howard of Apeldoorn for the information and foto' s.

The Australians had in the years vijftig-zestig Antartica zo' n five operational bases use. The fiftieth, the Wilkes basis, was by Americans in 1957, set up within the framework of " Internationally geographical Jaar" and it was transferred in 1959, to Australia. However in 1964, the Wilkes basis intolerable surplus became snow and ijsvorming. To up to that point the historie. question is now what does that Mini' s in those piteous circumstances?

The bases on the pole were in the hands of " Australien National Antartic research Expeditions" (ANAR.E). In 1960, AN.A.R.E decided that modified, small and cheap vehicles the preference had above large, complex and especially expensive means of transport. In 1962, came Volkswagen with an adapted beetle, the Antartic 1 and later the Antartic 2. Although these beetles meadow satisfied, had them nevertheless their shortcomings operated such as aileen two wheels and problems with cumbersome parcours.

In that time Terry O' had; Her autobodyzaak under the name " Re Car". He made among other things wooden baking for the American " Woodies". In the years sixty re imported Car Snow- Tracs with Porsche engine on Swedish chassis and came as such in contact with A.N.A.RE to see the photograph of the truck for 1965 Brimbank festival parade.

Terry realised themselves also that small and cheap vehicle ideal would be. He had choice from the new Morris 1100 or already existing Morris 850. it became the last. To be uitganspunt were possibly for zeveel original at to keep, what meant that traction direct of the Morris 850 engine had come. Nothing no expensive Porsche engine. In imitation of its Snow-Trac called Terry its new astuteness simple " mini Trac". The vele technical adaptations leave we here for what them to be. The rubberentracks that assembled under these mini became, existed from four layers and were 9.5 mm dik. They sat for three wheels (!) by side.

Was send " simpel" with the mini brake drums, which hydraulic the rear wheels headed in cooperation with standard differentially that strength transmitted to the side with, on that moment, lowest capacitance. The standard wheel with a set did not satisfy flaps and became replace by a system with two head brake cylinders, every track and headed by a lever. Linksaf got you then by linker lever to attract (brakes) and idem with the judge to make rechterbocht. The remaining engine components remained standard, such as the link, accelerator and the acceleration poker for usual celebrate accelerations. The top speed was valued on 40 km/u.

848 cc the engine proved to be too little strength at trac-voertuig have and were replaced for by 1098 cc from the Morris 1100. These standard engine got meadow Antartic-rated antifreeze and the light grade engine oil SEA 10. Of course the grille were covered for the super concerning the radiator cold air to prevent. The temperatures around the Australian camps amounted to in the period januari-februari (summer time in down-under) 2.5 to -2,6°C and round august fell that up to zo' n -21, l0e. Also the interior remained standard with, of course, the additive of chair heating.

From the findings of old ANAR.E employees appeared that these Mini-Trac rather successful were on snow, but less in harsh area because the engine block-system hung a lot vooraan. The body swung as a result, rather in front and backward. Unfortunately proved to be the problems with the wheel brakes and the link too large and Mini-trac in 1965, were returned to Australia and in 1966, in the Victorian snow fields uses. Joop Groos 17

Good heavens!

Did you use the Chinglish Bable Fish?

Good to see they gave the magazine a good plug.

Howard van Apeldoorn is one of our subscribers (I think we have two in Holland - three including Mick Mini).

Cheers,
Watto.

I am a fan of Clive Cusslers books , mostly for his stories but particularly for his detailed and technical descriptions of classic cars , vehicles , planes and boats he weaves into the stories . Cussler himself has an extensive car collection (don't drool on your keyboard when looking through them ... http://www.numa.net/car_collection.html ) and an interest in marine and automotive history so I sent him a copy of the article in the hope he may find the Mini-Trac interesting enough to use in a book , this is the reply I recieved this morning . Hopefully he will find a reason for Dirk Pitt to go back to the snow country and can use the Mini-Trac .

I went in search of the Mini-Trac last night, just on the off chance that it had really been left behind. There's a lot of rubbish left in the old tip sight near Wilkes station. I spotted a lot of rusty orange vehicles, including some with tracks, but nothing even vaguely mini-like.

Crikey Tim, it must be cold there this time of year. I'm surprised there is enough light for photos though. Isn't it always dark there this time of year?

I guess this explains why we didn't see you at the Muster in Hobart? We had a great time and the event was huge - by any Australian standard, not "huge for Tassie".

Despite hating the cold, I have always longed to visit the Antarctic, ever since seeing photos by one of my lecturers at uni, who was an official photographer on about three expeditions in the 1960s. Sadly, he is long gone now, so no chance of finding out if he ever got photos of the Mini-Trac.

Cheers,
Watto.

Hi Watto, I was at the Muster in Hobart, you were pretty busy serving customers so I left you alone. Great day, amazing selection of cars.

I've only been here a couple of days. I left home very early Tuesday morning and was here in time for a late lunch!

One of my colleagues is documenting environmental issues down here so we took a trip around to the abandoned station at Wilkes last night. Fantastic weather. Plenty of light for photos at this time of year, its summer, the sun 'sets' about 3:40AM and rises 12 minutes later! It never gets dark though. That photo was taken about 9:45 last night, but I was still getting sunburnt when I went to bed at 11:00PM. If you look at the thermometer it says that it is cold, but its not that bad, there hasn't been any wind at all so far. I'm not wearing shorts though.

Tim
