Heatway Rally 5th placegetter, GC4(sister to winner GC3 driven by Andrew Cowan) is currently for sale here in NZ. I'll post some pics of it for you all to see - the flares are off the car at the moment, but it is complete and original in every way! These were shipped from UK as 'official works cars'.

That'd be great.

I've read your website with keen interest............some great looking GT's there.

I sent you an email yesterday about one of my GT's no realising you were following the thread here. Just trying to find out a little history about my car and wether it was used as a rally/rallycross or race car of some sort. Being a very early one off the production line at Zetland I thought BMC/Leyland may have put it out to *work* rather than sell it off to a customer. I may be wrong but doing the research has been fun and very interesting.

Cheers

She rallied a mini with another lady whose name I think e was Pam Elam. Pam went on to do PR work within motorsport if I recall correctly.

Christine teamed up with Sue Ransome in the ""Birdcage Escort"" :D

Hi all,
I'm still continuing my research on the competition history of the Clubman GT in Australia. I have been told from different sources that the BLMC did use some early GT's as rally cars while other swear that they didn't.

Thanks to our MCCNSW historian Ian Thompson I now have a photograph (albeit a photocopied black and white pic) of a BLMC rally GT.

The small article and pic appeared in Motoring News Oct 8. 1971. It reads as follows.

British Leyland.
Southern Cross will be the inaugural appearance of the new-look BLMC team of a Clubman GT, a Morris Cooper S and a Kimberley.
BLMC have a team of three cars entered. One of the new Morris Clubman GT's will be crewed by Evan Green/Peter Brown, who finished second outright last year in a Cooper S. Andrew Cowan/John Bryson will be in a Morris Cooper S and South Australian John Taylor and Graham West will be having their first full factory ride in a much -modified Austin Kimberley.
These cars have all been prepared at the Sydney workshops of Gus Staunton's "Roadsafe International", and this team is also out for outright victory.

The GT was painted in the same works colours at Jim Barrett's Cooper S he recently sold at auction through Shannons. http://www.shannons.com.au/shannons/sha ... endocument

Now I need to go and sift through the tons of resources that were given to my in-laws by Gus Staunton years ago and see what I can find.

If I can find a body or engine number in the records it may just confirm that our GT was in fact the car that Evan Green campaigned.

John Bryson was a friend of mine in those days and was regarded as one of the top navigators. He may be able to shed some light on what you are after. He did live at St. Ives in Sydney but I do not know if that is still the case. John is a character in the truest sense of the word.

What I'm trying to do is track down a record of an engine/body number of the works GT to confirm that our GT is the real deal.

We were told by the previous owner that it was in fact a works car. Being number 4 off the production line and the oldest surviving GT in Australia there is a real possibility.

We have 2 GT's and to restore this one back to a rally car would be great.

If anything else the research has been fun. I've had emails from ex-BMC employees, race drivers etc. Fantastic info.

In 1972 Evan Green ran a Clubman GT in selected rounds of the Australian rally championship, it was light blue with white flash basically where the normal Gt stripes went, it was supported by Castrol. I saw it at the Bega Valley rally in 72 it was up against Bondy in the XU1. Peter Brown lived in Canberra and went on to race Alfa's for many years at Bathurst, he was given a 1071 cooper s by BMC to have fun with and gave it to his dad who drove it untill he was to old to drive, it had over 100,000 miles on it when they parked it up and was later restored and is still kicking about now, last time I saw him he was working At BERCO engine reconditioners in Canberra, but that was a fair while ago

They were great times. Evan ran a land crab ex London to Sydney car I suspect in a previous year...I think the rally was called the Snowy then with Bob Selby-Wood directing it. I stood at the intersection in Wyndham where there were two controls and Evan took off at the same time as Nigel Collier in The Renault Gordini and they dragged each other side by side up the hill and neither gave way. I was surprised that the 1800 was as quick as the Gordini and so was everyone else.
