Thanks all, been in touch with the supplier who is a good bloke

I'll second that, Ted Cross is his name and he runs the 123 distributorship (no pun intended) from his home after hours. I got a 123 for my brother Gareth's car, and he got the cap fitted incorrectly and broke it. After being quoted around the $100 mark by a retailer for a genuine Bosch replacement, Ted offered a new one at no cost because he hadn't got it running yet.

Definitely a good bloke, heartily recommended for anyone thinking that a 123 might be a good idea ;)

Went and saw ted last night. he swapped the dizzy for a brand new one with the standard cap, no questions asked. Very helpful. He will now investigate the cap situation and sort that out and I have the dizzy ready to go on the car tonight. Ted said he is thinking of getting a mini.

Permit me to be frank here, but f*ck that! If I spend $500 on a distributor I do not want to to have to break out the dremel to cut a slot in it so I can fit the dizzy cap the right way  Supply the right part for the right application!

i know what you mean, but i don't think there is a 90° cap that will fit without modification

There's no need for a right-angle cap in any case. When I fitted mine, I was advised that I may have trouble with clearance between the plug leads' exit from the cap and the grille on a roundy. It turns out that with 90° plug leads there's still an inch between leads and grille.. whereas with the Lucas dizzy I always had trouble with the leads being grazed by the grille.

In a Leyland there's acres of space. No need for the right-angle cap on a Mini, period.

A straight cap and 90° plug leads is way less hassle than angled caps, IMO.
Less wet weather problems too.

Well, at long last (and after driving a clubby for a week which was very luxurious!) the roundie is back on the road. I stuffed around with this for days and finally worked out the drive was the wrong way around becasue it just wouldn't fire. Instead of pulling the spindle out of the engine and reversing it I took the spring off the 123, used a hole punch to take out the pin and reversed the drive. Put it back in, got a green light on No.1 at TDC and away she goes! Thanks everyone for your on going support while I stuffed around with this. Thanks SGC for the time on the phone answering my questions. The car runs great now.
