It's amazing the jobs an offset vice can accomplish...

It's nearly perfect for most bearing jobs around the mini, but sometimes it will not keep the jaws quite parallel, so the bearing will go on skew-if and then jam. so you have to make sure the jaws stay paralell, or put the job in the exact center of the jaws to spread the load either side of the vice's screw.

Just gotta pay attention to that tiny point, and its the easiest job about.

Yep I avoid offset vices for that reason, give me a nice big straight cast Dawn (Oz) or Record (UK) one...
No Injun ones thanks!

Just use a socket that is long enough and big enough but not too big, and just hit the inner ring of the bearing. As long you dont hit the bearing you should be fine.

And what is the said cost of these Timken Bearings, where can i get one in brisbane.

I am shopping for clutch parts tomorrow, have to do plunger and housing, so will be buying a bearing as well.

The flat one is only available in Timken.
The later smaller one you have a choice- RHP from UK (pretty good), made in EU (so-so) and JHL? made in Japan (  :!: ) I got 3 friggin DAYS out of one of these.

You pays yer money.....

RHP is owned by NSK, but they don't make the equivalent to the good Timken one.

Fitted mine last night. Took under an hour start to finish (thanks to Tspeed Jem for an extra set of hands). Luckily I don't have the difficult bolt in my clutch cover so that helps alot. The bearing pressed on easily in my vise, using an appropriate sized socket to push against the inner ring.

I bought the 3w5-8 bearing from Karcraft a few weeks ago for $62ish + postage. It was the last one he had in stock at the time. The cheapest that I could find them in Australia was at MG heritage (or some such name) for around $45 but they were out of stock. Minispares were out of stock of the flat faced ones as well, they were a good price also.

Thanks to ken, i just picked up said timken bearing. Hey i could have got it cheaper somewhere else, but i support my mechanics. Always get treated better in the long run when asking for advice.

Got to say the face on the bearing is what impressed me, the stupid small bearing that was on there before has hardly any face on it.

Ken also showed me an old style self centering bearing, but still recomended the timken.

Now im all ready to rebuild clutch, new housing, new plunger, new bearing, new arm. After already doing flywheel, clutch kit, slave, master, THIS BETTER FARKN fix my problems.
