I bought myself a temp guage today. I remounted the oil guage and now matching temp guage down beside the dash cluster on the lower dash section. I'll be adding a dash facia later, so they will be mounted properly then.
I connected up the lights, both looking beautiful.

I pulled the old sender unit out of the block, and the new temp guage fits perfectly (threadwise) into the block.

But I start the car up and its pissing water out between the bolt bit that bolts into the block and the line that comes out of the centre of it. I did it up tighter.. didnt stop the leak. I pulled it out again for another look and the inner cable/line butts up to the bolt part flush, but I cant see how it can seal perfectly without some sort of washer/seal. None came with the temp guage.

Has anyone else done this and if so what should we do to seal the inner cable/wire to the bolt that holds it in the block?

It works but just need to stop the water leaking out..

not nocking but is it one of them cheap as chip's shitty ones i think they are auto something arather in the plastic triangle shaped box ??
if so chuck it in the bin and get your hands on pricol gauges look simular to a smiths and work great

it was cheap $30 worth. BUT, it matches my oil guage perfectly and that was important

I'll chuck a rubber washer or something in between the wire and the housing bolt if I have to. Will normal rubber stand up to the heat inside the block? Is there a different material I should use?

jill they read as well as i read chinese or ancient hiroglyphics .... oh i cant read them thats right .....
you have spent a shed load on the car dont skimp on stuff like that ... and it is a autogaurd am i right get the pricol they are worth 60 bucks for a motor you spent good hard earned on use decent gauges.... but it is up to you i know where i would spend my money

as i said if the motor boils because the temp gauge is crap only got yerself to blame i'll not say any more on the subject

I wouldn't use rubber there- go find a copper washer that fits.

Are you sure the sensor is not hitting inside the head and not letting it seal ?
Most of the time with the aftermarket temp gauges they need and adapter to stop the sender hitting inside the head and not letting it seal.

Otherwise..I don't know if any one has done this but..Maybe use plumers tape.....Three rolls in the thread direction

Plumbers tape is not the answer the thread does not need to seal the taper on the sender unit is the seal get and adapter and I will be very suprised if it dosent fix it but dont even think of using the tape seal it BEFORE it gets there.

I bought one of those cheap mechanical ones and it hits the block in the back of the water passage. Anyone know if i ground it down a bit would it bugger the sender??? If it does i'll go get a decent electric one

nav they have a fluid in them and if you are going to grind be careful ....... otherwise get a pricol gauge looks like a smiths and very acurate

Well i'll be..... you learn something new everyday. Well it looks like the bin for that guage. oh well that was $10 well spent........not


Was thinking of doing that anyway. Can the std dash guage be hooked in with a smiths so they both read at the same time? I don't like guages that doesn't work, deliberately or otherwise.

only if they are electrical but i think with two gauges it may change the signal i think the lectric ones work on ohms i prefer the mechanical ones
