My car was laid up for about six months and brake calliper has now leaked all over the brake pads. would the pads (green stuffs) which are covered in brake fluid, have to be replaced when we fix the callipers (as per the local mechanic who I took the car to for rego but who kept it for the brakes) or would they be ok if you just clean them up? It seems a bit unlikely that a metallic compound is destroyed by being covered in brake fluid.

I've gently burned brake fluid out of brake shoes before using a blow torch on my own cars and they were fine. You think disks can get red hot so burning fluid out of the pads cant be that bad.

I wouldn't do it to a customers car though.

I've heard of people putting pads in the oven on HOT, or on a BBQ hotplate.. never done it myself though. Can't see how it would hurt...

I once used metho to clean brake shoes that had been wet with leaking fluid, seemed to work Ok.

You can spend so much on cleaning products (although metho is cheap) only to forget that a full set of front or rear pads is approximately 30 bucks....

Sometimes an excuse can also be a blessing...

cooking them with a flame (or hot air gun better) until they dry out works, I have done it with clutch plates too.

I would squirt them with CRC Brakleen and then use them.

I used to use it to clean under the HQ before scruitineering. It is great as a quick degreaser. It is too dear to use as a regular degreaser but for spot leaks it is fantastic.

don't bother trying to clean them. the fluid gets soaked in. they stuffed. i tried cleaning mine, the break power was half they slipped through all the time.
