I pulled the engine apart to discover the front main bearing looks good with no scoring etc but my centre main and rear main bearings are flogged and are thru the bearing material in places and te rear has a big score all the way around both halves of the bearing.
All the bearings on the conrods are looking ok.

Should I have the crank checked as all the journals are already -0.040" undersize. If ok linished and polished witn new bearings to suit or is it better to go get another crank?

Yesterday Mini_special changed her brake light switch, changed dissy cap/leads/coil/rotor button etc and flushed the brakes. I was given the task of sitting and watching :) She's much happier now :)

Measure all the crank journals with a micrometer.
If worn more than .001" oval, or scored, I'd find another.
Beyond -0.040", sorry but that crank has had its day.
If worn, linishing won't save it.

Figures, such is my luck lately. at least 998 cranks are cheap. or that 1098 I have in the corner of the garage is starting to look good to build that.

I also forgot to mention that when spinning the crank by hand it comes to a spot where it is difficult to turn, same spot every time. Is that a sign of a bent crank?

I investigated the source of water ingress to the rear compartment of the clubman estate. The rear sliding window channels (similar to Mk I & II front windows) are a consumable item - they grow moss and need to be replaced every 40 years it would seem. Built-in obsolescence!

Luckily BasisNZ is a great stockist of such parts so I should be able to source new runners fairly easily. If you need any trim, check them out.

I also cleaned all the muck from around the spare wheel compartment (under the rear floor) and treated the rust. The water ingress may not be due to the window rubbers, but they need sorting. I will investigate further with a garden hose in the weekend.

And I looked longingly but dispiritedly at the shell of my Mk II which is awaiting attention and has been for six months. Ho hum.

Finished the rebuild and painted an 1100 motor for a friend. Tomorrow the 850 comes out to reclaim the box before dropping the new motor on it.

Today I went to the post office and picked up the BMW mini supercharger, Austin cooper s boot script, reconditioned late model MGB tacho (can cope with performance electronic ignitions), and the 60s motolita steering wheel I brought for the project. Less than a month and I'm university free and able to actually work on the project car not just spend money buying bits for it. I can't wait.

Borrow mine, it will weld the thin metal better

I got my minis into the new carport. Still not much room but at least they are out of the weather and behind a gate.

Layla is still covered in Hay mud and still has a scuff on the paint where i hit a marker

Took the 850 motor out today and separated the block from the gearbox, took the radiator to the radiator specialists to get cleaned and pressure tested and get it back tomorrow. Big cleanup of gearbox and engine bay (lots of oil leaking everywhere) before reassembly with the nice clean and freshly painted 1100 block.

Fitted a CD player to the Moke, with output jack for headphones so the missus can listen to The Carpenters on our next trip, and I DON"T have to listen the The Carpenters on our next trip.
