i feel like the oil you put in your engine should be designed to work perfectly without any additives.

but if your engine is on its last legs or blowing a lot of smoke i'd give it a go.

i just wondered, it's meant to prolong the life of a good engine.

If you want to prolong the life of a good engine (A series that is) change the oil every 1000Ks or once a month whether it needs it or not.

Do you have a problem with unstable oil? Then why the heck would you want Oil Stabilizer?

It is snake oil designed to make money for the manufacturer and do nothing at all for your engine.
I would not use it in any engine. It is a scam.

I drive 66k's a day in my mini to and from work so I would have to change the oil every 15 days at that rate. I thought I was doing a good job changing the oil and filter every 2000k's. You wouldn't change the oil without the filter (would you?) so if I should do it every two weeks it is going to get rather expensive. Add this to running 98 octane fuel plus valve seat recession additive and it is dearer than running a big car. This is why I tell people running this little car isn't really as economical as they may think. I know changing the oil is cheaper than rebuilding the engine (hence attaching rare earth magnets to my oil filter as well) so I may have to re think the frequency of the oil changes. If it is necessary I guess it would be a price I am prepared to pay to keep driving my car and also keep the original engine in it.

Every 1000Ks is silly, IMO- a waste of oil.
Mine gets an oilchange every 1500 MILES and a spinon filter every 3000 MILES.
With rare earth magnets on the filter, I get mostly nothing on the sump plug magnet.
And there is never any crud, varnish or sludge in the neck of the alloy rocker cover.
KMX 20W/50 is my oilz of choice. 1/2 the price of Castrol Edge Sport 25W/50 and just as good, IMO.

If you're driving long distances and the oil is always hot, it'll go further between changes than otherwise. This is because the impurities get chance to boil and burn out of the oil whereas in an engine which only does short distances and never gets hot, the quality of the oil suffers much earlier and requires changing more often.

I'm undertaking a bit of an experiment in this area at the moment. My 1152 is just starting to show signs of burning oil past the rings, and with the type of driving it does most of the time (10km city/freeway driving to work and back) the oil is just getting up to temperature when I arrive. My last oil change produced really black oil, no doubt chock full of combustion by-products.

I'm hoping the 88*C thermostat I've fitted will allow the oil temperature to rise faster, prolonging its quality by burning/boiling off the blow-by past the rings.

With your daily range, I'd be changing the oil at 1500mi (2400km) intervals, and the filter at 3000mi.

I swear by the Lucas trany additive. Used it a few older autos and
really without a doubt makes a noticeable difference.:D
Tho can't comment on the motor additive..never used it...
tried it on the little cog demonstrator on the counter of spare parts
store....works there..

Maybe Wombat meant miles not k's?

We used to change Mini oil every 1000 miles, 40 years ago... when it was cheap.
But the oils are better now.

It depends on how many miles you do on average per week. If it takes you more than about 3 months to do 1000miles then I'd change it every 1000 miles or 3 months.

This time around I changed it at 750miles, 4 months and BOY it needed it by the looks of it. Too many short trips... Would not have wanted to go till 1000miles believe me....
