I have almost sorted this car out.

New Clutch, CV's all running good now, but a new problem has arisen.

When i attempt to go down into second i get nice grindies, if you cant find it grind it, but its happening more frequently. I put new Baulk rings in the box about 8 months ago, and running down from QLD, ive been sitting in 4th gear most of the time, although being in Melbourne means lots of bloody traffic lights doesnt it.

The grindies is happening now on the up change of 1st into seconds, but it still goes in pretty smoothly at idle revs.

I will be taking the box out when i get to Adelaide, and trying to sort this issue out.

What should i be looking for other than worn baulk rings, im not sure if they were cheap chinese sets or not, and i have 2 spare originals from when they were replaced last time.

I will do an oil and filter change tomorrow, so it will be interesting to see how much metal is stuck to the sump plug magnet. Hoping its not a XMAS tree on the end.

You may have to learn to double the clutch till you sort it out

Yeah if it`s a 4-syncro box then id expect the syncor ring has worn bad &-or the syncro surface on 2nd gar is sad

But in the middle of the repair i would check the quality (tention) of the 3x syncro hub springs (inside 1st-2nd selector hub) they are often soft & need an upgrade

Is it really worth taking it all apart just to fix a syncro (or whatever the problem is)? I've been reading your posts as you go and i figure there is going to be something else you'll need to fix soon enough

It just seems to me that for such an easily worked around problem its not worth taking it all apart. Whilst the crunch on the gear change is a nuisance, i've been putting up with it for the 4 years i've been driving. I learnt to double clutch and i've never had to worry about it, it just becomes a natural part of changing gear, you don't even think about it.

Thats just my opinion anyway, if fixing its not a problem then fix away. But maybe fixing it is more of a nuisance then leaving it be a while

the clutch is brand spankers, machined, new plate and diaphram, and never worked so well before. Ill have a look, but it feels great at the pedal.

Hehe, my first mini used to jump out of 2nd and 3rd, and crunched into 2nd. It was pretty funny when i let other people try and drive it, they finally get it into second, and then it jumps out and they go to accelerate and all they got was revs. Followed by more crunching as they try and get it back into 2nd :D

Steve we talked about this weeks ago and I let you know what I thought it was (see theminiman's) post....Try braking using the brakes and not relying on the the gearbox.............wait 'till something else craps itself and you have to pull the engine out and split the g/box......you have other fish to fry first!!

QUESTION someone once told me that double suffle gear changes on a syncro box stuffs the syncro (bauking rings) is this true ? As a truck driver 18speed crash boxes , double suffle no clutch gear changes, heel and toe have become second nature in a truck, and yes I still grind a gear every now and then after 25 years of driving heavy veihcles

No. As long as you have the timing right it can't hurt anything except your left knee.

I have been driving trucks for nearly 30 years, over twenty of them with Roadrangers. You pick up a few skills along the way and these days I never crunch the gears.
I just slip it into "D" and drive away.
You have to love an Allison hooked to a Cummins and then with the heated mirrors and heated seat and cruise control.... Some days you just don't feel right getting paid for driving it.

Do you find an auto in a truck is a bit silly when you have 18 gears or whatever and it goes through them all one by one? I drove a kenworth out of the workshop and around the yard once, and it was rediculous. You put your foot down, then all of a sudden the whole truck jerks into the next gear and then your jerk again as it accelerates then it changes again. You just sit in the chair jerking back and forth.

I admit you could probably get used to it and operate the truck more smoothly, but really, don't you just want to skip a few gears here and there?

When I was driving trucks with Roadranger gearboxes I would start in whatever gear I felt was right and then skip gears if needed. My first truck had a nine speed overdrive box. When empty I could take off in 4th and then go to 5th > 7th > 8th. (8th was top gear. It had 8 numbered gears and an extra low creeper gear and another extra hidden gear  ) Loaded I would start in 3rd or 2nd depending on up or downhill and then go through the lot. I think the computer controlled automatic manual boxes have to go through all the gears but you can select a starting point like 4th or 6th to take off in.

With the truck I drive now it has a proper Auto box and not a manual box with an auto shift. It has a 6 speed and a lock up torque converter all controlled by a computer. It works very well but I am glad I don't pay the fuel bill. The auto can get confused when you are on rough sites and it sometimes pays to select the gears manually to stop it shifting up when it gets wheelspin.
