The in laws got a few boosters today. One is a VH44....thats good for Cooper S discs yea? I've heard that part number mentioned a lot before.

Another one, also PBR, is missing the part number tag. It's larger, but almost identical in appearance. It says on it 'Pat No. 260550'

Anyone know what it is for? Any good in a Mini (with Honda discs maybe?)

Anton........i keep getting told that boosters on Cooper S Discs are a waste of time (been told that it could be the main problem with my discs at the moment :? ), have you heard anything to this effect?????

I hear that, then I see tons still with them.

I hear the proportioning valve in the rear can cause probs with boosters and discs....

The rear valve is a limit valve, not a proportioning valve. So a booster will really only boost the fronts, when you brake real hard.
Nothing wrong with using a booster if you want- I'm putting one on Barney, so he maybe stops like the wife's Laser...

to answer my own question, thanks to Mr Google....

"VH44JA Cooper S brake booster made by PBR.
Its pattern no is 260550"

So is a VH44 booster not a Mini booster? Or are they both Mini boosters....I am :?

VH44 was used on MK2 S. MK1 S had Lockheed booster.

<edit> note VH44 was also put on Holdens etc as an accessory. There were a few different cylinder bores used.

so VH44 and VH44JA are different.....VH44 was Mk 2 S ? What was VH44JA used in? It's larger than the VH44.....

Being larger, does it have more boosting power?

Is the vacuum body bigger, or the cylinder on the front?

I think all VH44s use the same vac body, but have different cylinders. The `J' etc designates cylinder bore.
Sorry, I dunno which numbers fit what.

the vac body is smaller on the VH44, but I think the cylinder bores look the same size.

I am new to boosters, so know jack s**t. I just want to work out which will be best with the S discs in redmond and which for the Honda stoppers in JAM.

I'll take them somewhere and get them checked out.

Pedal effort will be higher on the S brakes.
After driving Josh's car I wouldn't bother with a servo on 9.1" Honda discs. It's way too sensitive, IMO.

Anton,
Barney's servo says `PAT NO 260550'.... and it has the S mounting bracket on the vac body.

Talking to a guy at Bendigo swap meet last year from a crowd in Melbourne called Hydroboost that overhaul brake boosters re PBR boosters for Minis.
The PBR VH44JA booster used on later MK2 'S' and Clubman GT cars is the same as the PBR VH44J booster used on some Valiants. The A signifies that it is set up for mounting on the RH side of engine bay. Valiant one is usually on the LH side of engine bay(It was on the Valiant I had). The units are symetrical and by rotating the control valve and the vacuum chamber they can be set up for either LH or RH mounting. (That's according to the bloke from Hydroboost) So if you need a PBR booster check out Valiants at Pick-A-Part etc.
Edit: The VH44J/JA is different to a VH44
Regards
RonR
