I live in hilly areas, lots of big hills. Frequently i get below 20 k's with trucks going up hills. And it doesnt bother me at all  . I know that that happens.

Im not missing the point. The point is i HAVE to not exceed 80km/h, without risk of fines and license DQ's. And if i did your courteous things then i really wouldnt get anywhere because i would never be on the road, always pulled over :x .
Give it a go guys sit on 80 clicks for a year. See how **** annoyed it makes you! ( sorry if your limits are the 80, im sure you will understand my point  )

i would have to agree with CAMEL and MAKKA

I, being a GREEN P plater understand both points here...

I was stuck to 90 for a year (and I also have my bike license, which by the way is full speed license now)... I would agree that sometimes, its just stiff crap to people behind you, you could be in a real rush and need to get somewhere.
But i think Makka also has a great point of, that if the opportunity is right and SAFE pull out of the way and let people pass...

The other note i have to you makka is that especially in NSW p platers are hassled by the cops for blatently ****ed up things.... I have been pulled over for 62 in a 60 zone at 2am when there was no other cars on the road and I wasnt being a dickhead. I have been defected for having no water in my wsahbottles.... There is a lot of hostility towards p platers from pigs....

Not trying to accuse anything, but especailly in NSW just remember for red p platers and green p platers we dont have enough poins to risk it.... getting done for some ****ed speeding fine like 2km over is beyound the pail....

I seem to remember that I had to drive at 80kph for a year
I also had a truck speed limit of 80 for the first five years until they raised it! So if you think you are being hard done by then you are a fool.
You are lucky to be able to do 80, most of the drivers in Sydney never get out of 60 kph zones in their whole lives!

When I got my licence the speed limit in built up areas was 30MPH. The open road limit was nominally 60MPH but you could go a tad faster in "De-Restricted" zones IF you could prove you were "in control" of the car (whatever that means!!).

People were taught to be courteous, proud to be courteous and it was encouraged...road rage almost unheard of....people used to travel in convoys!! (no, not tailgating in a big train...but "travelling together" to help one another out in the case of breakdown (it happened a little more often than nowadays).

Nambian....you are on a hiding to nothing....you seem to have a very unhealthy and rigid view of open road Motoring....good luck in the future.

When I was a young fella ( I never had P's) so I am an old fart there was a trick to getting people off your tail on the open road. Roads were really bad then so all you had to do was when going through a left hand corner, drop your back wheel in the dirt and accelerate (not in a mini). This did things like break windscreens and lights and generally stuff paint work. They got the message PDQ.

yeah everyone has to go through having p's and being limited to 80ks
it makes perfect sense and i personally never had any problems sticking to it.

i hate being tailgated, but i don't mind being passed by someone who is going faster.

This one is still kinda about tailgating...... but a bit different. Makka will have a few good stories, i'm sure...

Its when someone is driving very close behind you.... but in your blind spot. Its bad enough when they are tailgating, but at least you can see them there. When they sit in the next lane where you cant see them.... THATS when I get really pissed off. Ive had a few nights where i can see the glow from their head lights, but where is their car???

People who sit in your blind spot are just as bad, if not worse, IMO. But they have no idea.

boy oh boy, has this stirred up a hornets nest. OK, camel is correct to remain within the speed restrictions placed upon his license. Makka, is also correct WRT driver courtesy.

Slow moving traffic is a hazard. No matter what the vehicle is or what grade of license the driver has. Just don't tailgate, coz if yer up someones clakker then you won't be able to see around them let alone safely overtake them. Yeah i know makka this doesn't work for heavy vehicles.

In a lot of cases Camel won't be able to pull over and let traffic pass. But where the opportunity to pull over can be done so safely, it is a good thing to do - lead by example.

Sadly driver courtesy has gone the way of dinosaurs. and yeah i do believe in karma, dikwad drivers eventually come unstuck.

Yes Well about the 80km i thought that you guys had the 100km limit for L platers from the start, But i was wrong

And i was going to say this a while ago, but i just thought i'd let things cook up a bit.
MOST of the time i can't pull over, because there is no where to go, cept in large ditches, holes, because the roads i travel everyday are in shithouse condition, too dangerous to pull over, and no where to go.
BUT
When i go on to the main highways along the coast, and in the midlands, with good roads and plenty of overtaking lanes, Instead of merging infront of persons, i DO slow to running pace and wave them through, like a policman ordering cars about. And it makes me fell good when they wave at me when the are behind me, smile on the way past, and the wave in the rear view mirror, i let dozens of cars through when not in a hurry, i dont even think about it :? , just do it. this is not some sort of lame defence either - i dont need to defend anything OK
So for the last time, i propose that i am not the inconsiderate road hog, general bad type of P plater that people interpret my stories to be  .

Oh well i have 50 days till i get off my 1st year P's and get normal speed limits, and that will be fun

HAHAHA in victoria there is no such thing as green p's or speed restrictions on p's, we are the same as any other driver but with a different demerit point scheme. not sure what it is in other states.

When running in my new head (cylinder head, not the one on my shoulders!) and not being able to do the speed limit, i always tried to pull over if i could, and always stayed in the left lane on the highway.

Back to the headlight thing, i swear almost every car coming towards me has thier high beams on, especially taxis. i have flashed heaps of taxis only for them to flash me back...

AND the other day whilst driving mum's car (2001 laser) someone was so colse to me ON THE HIGHWAY that i could not see their lights in the mirror.

AND there was a dickhead on the freeway doing 90 in the centre lane , so i passed him/her on the left, then they sped up and pulled infront of me, and put the brakes on! so i pulled back into the centre lane and SO DID THEY! so i flashed the ****, that fixed him.

Trucks generally do not piss me offwhen going up hills, if i can pass i do, but not too worried because i understand that they are hauling a big load and this will slow them down, the mini slows down substantially going up some hills!

have never run over traffic cones, worried i'll damage the car!!!!

the best way to fix tail gaters is install 1 of those rear fog lights that the Rover minis have, ( like mine) then put a bright globe in it, n aim it up a little, then when being tailgated turn it on!! trust me it really works!!!

i also have the problem of a few certain cars that travel the same time as me on the freeway every day!!! So my front lights are aimed high n i just follow them once or twice n they get the point!!!!!!

on single lane roads you can't do much except slow down a little so you can still brake safely, but on dual lane roads there doesn't need to be a problem - i think as important as 'don't tailgate' is 'keep left'. most of the time that would solve the tailgating problem. a few months ago i saw some idiot doing 80 in the 100 zone on tonkin hwy here in perth with about 4 cars trying to get past. instead of moving over to let them through, he decided to jump on the brakes and very nearly caused a 5 car high-speed pileup... i don't condone tailgating - obviously its unsafe driving, but i think too often people take it personally - like the person is trying to annoy them intentionally or something - they're just wanting to get past... let them go and get on with your life instead of initiating some road-rage that might escalate into something messy...

Well good that this is back if you like. No holding up of traffic for me now. P's taken down tomorrow, so i do the signposted speed limit, It will be fun, given that i did stick to my speed limit.
