you guys are totally off the planet...

Lynda, I reckon it's a sticky needle & seat, intermittent starving of fuel

that's the easiest thing to check first, costs the least, doesn't take long etc.

take the top off the round thing (float chamber) next to the carb that has the fuel line going into the top of it, turn it upside down and pull the pin out of the float, under that is a long hollow brass nut with a thing inside it - the nut is the seat, the thing inside is the needle.... betcha the needle has seen better days and is sticking inside the seat. You can buy new ones at repco....
