I'm about to put a rod change box together, ony i can't find my manuals (still in boxes somewhere :oops: )

What i'm after is the top picture of the box so i put the selectors back on the cluster the right way.

Also what is the diff side housing shim process, really i need the formula for the clearance minus gasket thickness to set the preload.

Thanks,
Tom

Sorry I don't have a pic of the selectors, but they are not hard to figure out.

Later style diff `angular contact' bearings (with `thrust' marked on one side) have .005" preload when new. The thrust marked faces go to outside.
Early style `deep groove' diff bearings only got .001-.002" preload.

I assemble the RH side cover and tighten the 5 bolts.
Then, I sit the box on its RH side. This stops the shims behind the LH cover falling about and getting trapped out of position before the cover is tightened..

the current ones aren't marked with 'thrust' sides are they?

the gaskets I put in my gearbox a few weeks ago were .015" thick - so twice that is pretty thick. I put a shim between the inner race and the crown wheel to move the bearing out so it didn't need 60 odd thou of shims

shims = gasket - .002"

Yeah the side gaskets now are bloody thick.
I put a .010" shim on the RH cover to start with.
I have also built a few boxes with NO side cover gaskets, just Loctite 515 Master Gasket sealant. No leaks... :wink:

re the bearings, the angular contact outer rings have a thick side, this goes outwards. Used to be marked `thrust' but maybe the caring folk who make these now don't bother. :lol:
