Can i machine down a+drop gears to fit into an a series case

i found out for myself and the answer is only if you get it case hardened again.

Rather than machine the idler gear, have the idler gear bearing holes in the case/transfer housing bored out and fit the larger bearings.

ah,,, er,,, um,,, why not just fit the right gear set instead???
