The nut is on the jet tube assembly thingy - screw down is richer and screw up is leaner. Go by the manual and then wind it DOWN 1.5 flats and you will be in the ball park. You will then be able to do the finer adjustments to get her running like a trooper.

Yours, Aye

i read it as this...

Working with the carb in the car, screw the nut UPWARD (towards the sky) to make it leaner, DOWNWARD to make it richer :D

yeah but you cant tell cos you cant see the nut while you're doing it
i believe its clockwise from above the carburettor to richen the mixture, which viewed from below the carburettor is loosening the nut and turning anti clockwise..
this moves the needle down and more fuel can flow over it.

if it is leaning out I need to richen the mix (turning clockwise ) Right ?

Turning what? What's the adjustment and where is it?

Hmm HS4 if my memory serves me correctly it is a screw recessed on the side of the carby and unlike the normal SU you screw it in to richen and out to lean.
Good luck with it I never got mine right I know a lot of people have but mine was always lean in the high rev range and it seemed to have all the right jets and needles.

The HS2 and HS4 are the same with the adjustment nut, not sure about HS6/hif44 although I think the HS6 is the same.
Cheers Pete
