Thanks guys,

I'm not claiming to be the be all end all of spray painting and panel beating. I'm just willing to share knowledge where others hold back.

What I am really hoping is that when I post this draft at the end of the week the other trades people in this forum will come back with some of their ideas and we can brain storm up an even better "How To".

I know your out there don't be shy please your input would be greatly appreciated not just by me but everyone else will benefit from it. With the input of others we can really tweek it. I'm ok at explaining things but there are others out there that might be able to put it better. Knowledge is knowledge, but if you can't comunicate it then its hard to pass on.

I will just clear this up now. I am posting an ACRYLIC LACQUER "How To". I refuse to teach anyone 2K because

1. It is illegal to use it at home (in all fairness Acrylic Lacquer is boarder line but its not as dangerous)

2. It is incredibly toxic and dangerous. As we speak the European Union is trying to push for a replacement so they can outlaw 2K. They came out with water based paints a couple of years ago, but its only good for Base or colour, you still need to use the normal 2K clear over it. As of 31/12/2008 all production in australia requires use of water based paint. You can not manufacture a car in this country and paint it completely in 2K. Panel shops are going to start takin it on more and more over the coming years. But look regardless of all that, you must use an air fed mask with this stuff because it is so toxic that no filter will surfice. Even if you think your macho and you don't care, think about you family and neighbours. The effects of just one paint job could be detrimental to a childs health. I don't want to be responsible for it.

I am happy to do a seperate how to on automotive enamel but NOT 2K. Sorry I'm not going to budge.

Sidewinder1275 is there any chance I could get you to send me a PM regarding your question? I know I'm the master of rail roading other peoples threads but I would rather not digress here

Guys thanks for all your input and support, I'll have a draft up in a few days so your thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

maybe you could also do another sticky on "what the F#@* happened here!"
Meaning, reasons why you may have blown in dry spots, orange peel, blooming, opaque finishes (especially on edges), etc, etc.
Then explain possible causes, and solutions.
I would put one up, but I'm too lazy.
Explain most of all, the law of the "P's"!
Poor Preperation makes for a Piss Poor Performance!
You have my vote phat!

I only hold back in helping as there seem to be too many people trying to teach TOTALLY different techniques so these days I just keep out of it so theres not too much confusion.
If anyone does want my advice or help I will help out though.

Good man!!

The number of times I've read on Ausmini about people buying and spraying 2K paints at home with a "meh, how bad can it be" attitude amazes me... not just the disregard for their own health but that of their pets, kids, neighbours, neighbours kids, neighbours pets, etc.

I know sod all about spray painting but I've learned one thing, never f_ck with toxic chemicals, no matter how invulnerable you think you are. Good on you for taking this responsibility seriously :)

toymini76 and miniDave,

Guys I totally understand where you are coming from. It can get very confusing trying to explain that there is more than one way and that you stand by your own method for reason XYZ. People sometimes don't take it as it was intended and it gets messy.

That said, I'm about to post that draft. If you guys have industry experience I would really appreciate you feed back as I mentioned. Even if you just pm me to tell me to stop sniffing thinners  .

As you both said, mine is one method. I'm sure you'd follow the same procedure 95% of the way. I was just hoping to brain storm a little and then write up a tweeked version thats even better. You know where I'm coming from?

micowen i recon thats a top idea. That would be very helpul to a lot of people.

sgc thanks. I started to get a couple of PM's about 2k and thought i should just put it out there that no means no. I'm not going to have any part in anyone exposing their kids to deadly carsonigens that could take 30 years off the end of ther lives. Sorry, I guess that makes me a shirt lifter.

So to scare the Camino Gold out of you there Brown Cluby, but sort of and yes. Asbestos you only need to be exposed to once and you are at risk of asbestosis or mesio were as 2k is an acumulative thing in adults, I'd compare it to what they say about smoking only 15 times worse and much faster acting. But it could have very very serious possibly leathal effects on a child's or pet's respiratory system even after just one paint job.

If no one has told you then how are you meant to know. I do know better so I kinda feel obliged not to encourage people to use it at home.

it basically rips the crap out of all your mucous membranes and corrodes the skin - and that is just the short term damage

Hey, is 2 pack hifill/primer in the same 2K boat? Or epoxy primer?
Some of us like using these under acrylic, as they don't hold moisture like normal primer does.

Hi doc, 2k primer is an epoxy primer and it does hold less moisture... But please forgive me, as I said earlier I flat out refuse to teach anyone 2K. The health and environmental effects of this stuff are terrible. Granted the primers aren't as bad as the clear or base but its still not nice stuff, plus it is flat out illegal to use outside of a spray booth. Sorry, not budging.
