998 Clubby, around 1976.

The 99 mean it is a 998.
The H means high compression i think
The 79P would mean clubman.
The rest is the engine number.

The number prefix. Which is actually 99H791P, if you look again.
Later ones (with the air injection pump etc) were 99H834AJH prefix.

99 = 998cc
H = Transverse engine
791 = Leyland Mini/Leyland Mini S from 75 to mid 76.
P = Breather system
The rest is just numbers. :lol:

Nothing means Clubman. They ditched that name in 72. :wink:

Ok so if thats the case,

I thought that up until the mid of 1975 they used 1100 before being changed back to 998cc .

I have a source for that info Watto from the mini experince mag

Please note: the engine is in a 75 clubman or leyland mini

Explain that please

The Zetland factory that made the 1100 motors closed in October 74. Some engines were assembled and fitted to the Enfield built cars until stocks run out sometime in the first half of 75 up till stocks of the 998's were imported from England.
The last 1100 motors in 75 had the engine number prefix 1015.
The first imported 998 motors in 75 had the prefix 99H791P.

There is no such thing as a 75 Clubman. It is either a Leyland Mini or a Leyland Mini S.

Yeah I understand it’s a Leyland mini
So does that mean even if it was made in May 75' it’s the original 998 engine?

So where do you get your info?

thank you for your time and help

:D

Watto is only human, so there are a few minor typos and inaccuracies in TME here and there.
Morris1100 on the other hand is inhuman, he has 1st hand experience of that period of Leyland production.:mrgreen:

And, I had an engine the same as yours in a `76, and I have the later one I mentioned still, from a `78. :wink:

Hi

Wow that’s amazing :D,

Still disappointed with myself,

I thought I could have got a car with an engine bigger than 998 but
beggars can't be choosers especially when trying to keep original.

I can't really knock the 998 either

Thanks to both of you

With a bit of work and $$$ you can turn a 998 into an 1188, or even a 1220.. with 60HP+ at the wheels, (NA) so don't knock them. :lol:

1220 is got by boring to 68.0mm and using a 1098 crank. So it's both bored and stroked. :wink:

Yes I've built 3x 1220 motors- 1 Mini and 2 A/H Sprite ones.
They last OK if you keep revs to 6500-7000 max. 8)
