well after the 43 day in adelaide the other day (in november) My car ran hot. I have a brand new radiator running a good quality coolant. Dont bullshit me that a mini wont run warm when sitting in bumper to bumper traffic in 43 degrees. The overall design is not especially suited to Australia with a side mounted radiator. Im all for the people who want to sit there sweating there nuts off (Bits for the ladies) at the traffic lights but anyone who has a job that has to wear a uniform a mini is not really a suitable daily drive.

Just being a realist
Maybe the reason your car is overheating is that you don't have the radiator that was made in Australia for Australian conditions? They didn't overheat when they were new. The magazines of the 60s are not full of "help my Mini is overheating" stories".
The position of the radiator has nothing to do with overheating. You need the right size radiator with the right fan and everything else working correctly.
Seriously, if your car is overheating there is a problem that needs to be (and can be) fixed.

saw quite a few new cars overheated in Sydney last Sunday in the 40 plus day and a lot of them were supposed Australian cars and only a couple of years old so any car can overheat in hot conditions if they dont have the cooling system in good nick not just minis

Yeap. Got that. Doesn't need to be cheap. Just needs to be reliable enough to get me to work most of the time.

OK, I can see how you got that impression and I did not intend to make that assumption.
I was thinking at the time what it is like to drive a mini (in my case a Morris) is the amount of times people say..(which you will get too) "Nice and cheap to run" I don't say it, but reality is a Hyundi or whatever will be less expensive.
So I apologise for not properly explaining myself.

Like the suzuki swift 3 cyl pov pak i have for sale is a cheap car, it won't go down in value, and uses very little fuel by todays standards, but it is a boring shopping trolley  Give me my mini on a 40 degree day.

Mine ran about 2/3 on the guage, no boiling or spitting out water.
I was hot, but GO THE 1/4 WINDOWS 8)

My van, which has rusty sludge for coolant and a bog stock Oz-spec cooling system hit 195ºF on the temperature gauge in stop-start traffic, in 47º heat in Melbourne last February.

Is that warmer than normal? Yes, but not by very much.. maybe 10ºF. Did it overheat? Not even close. It actually ran better that day than at any other time that I've owned it.

The assertion was that Mini's are not suited to a hot climate, and that is plainly wrong. Show me a car which doesn't run warmer when ambient temperatures rise by 15ºC

The problem is, Dougys, that you're making an assertion based on your mini about EVERYONE'S minis that isn't correct, to a forum full of people who drive their minis everyday, some of whom have done so for many many years.

Like Morris said, if your car is overheating, then it has a problem that should be fixed. Don't assume that because your mini mechanic is someone that someone else has heard of that your car is in perfect condition. Get the problems sorted out, and enjoy your car. If you can't do that, go back to your boring sh!tbox and leave the mini in the garage.

I used my Cooper Ss as daily drivers from 1968 to 1981 (occasionally interspersed with an Austin 1800 ute) in Melbourne and Adelaide with lots of interstate driving too. Only time I ever had to have one towed was on the way back from Mallala raceway in 1974 when it broke a steel UV.

And they were far from stock motors. Enormous fun to drive a suped up Cooper S in city traffic - it can fit in spaces where others can't and gets there pretty quick too.

I also used my 1300 Mini van as a daily driver from 1993 to 1998 and it never failed me.

Sure, there's more maintenance involved than modern cars - regular oil changes are a must and the cooling system has to be kept in top shape. Electronic dissys have made things easier these days. SUs are simple. Exhaust systems don't like speed humps (nor do sumps on lowered cars), and 10 inch tyres (the best!) wear relatively quickly, but are cheap to replace compared to bigger diameters.

Lack of aircon is only something which you miss now because most cars these days have it. It used to be a rarity and nobody ever complained about not having it. You just put up with the heat and opened the side vent windows which were included on Aussie spec Minis for that very reason. My S also came with a factory approved Webasto sunroof.

As for the noise, nothing not even a V8 beats the sound of a worked S with a 45 Weber, Brownrigg big bore LCB and an original S Lukey mufller.
