If still loose with the proper spacer, read my Timken bearing thread in the how-to forum.

Also just make sure your not using a drive flange thats worn out.

Did the old bearings look to be the cause of your problem?

There was a bit of wear on them, but the bearing faces were still pretty smooth and clean.

The grease inside them was almost tar it was that thick. So they were on the way out. Ill finish the job off and swap the spacers over and see how i go.
Thanks for your advice everyone.

And Doc, I read your article the how to section a while ago, and really should have reread it again before i did it.
from what i read the problem is the long spacer that i put in is causing the slop.
Oh well, live and learn, i wont be making that mistake again.

Sounds like the rubber universals could be the culprit. Not known for their longevity if subject to hard driving or they have not been installed properly (u-bolts overtightened).

Classic symptoms of a worn diff pin and planet gears.
I'd change them before they go BANG and the broken pin spears a hole in the casing. Then all the oilz runs out.

Hi doc,
I think it is the diff pin thats gone. I swapped the spacer with the proper one and reassembled it all back together and the noise is still there.
Its also the same whether the wheels are straight or turning.

Whats worse is i sold my spare engine 2 days ago. The only reason i kept it round for 6 months is as a spare engine. Karmas a bitch.

If the noise is there whether going straight or on corners then it wouldn't be the diff pin. If it sounds like it's coming from that general area, then I'd guess at the Main shaft Bearing in the Gearbox.
