I see what your problem is now (I think). I haven't done this job for years and never on a mini. Those two little screws which hold the two halves together also anchor the rack tubes in the wheel boxes. The ends of the tubes are flared IIRC. Undo these and the tubes and wheel boxes will seperate. From what you have said though it sounds a little difficult. Take two asprin and a cup of tea and have a long lie down if it gets tooo difficult :D

hi Jill - I have just done this manouver on mine and there's a bit of a trick to it. I found this one by accident, luckily it was farely soon after starting to figure it out.

Imagine - A line running across the car through both wheel boxes. You have to rotate the entire wiper mechanism around this axis.

So - with motor unbolted from firewall and both nuts off the tops of the wheel boxes, rotate the motor assembly forward and up. This rotates the wheel boxes down and forward. Contin ue rotating the motor assembly up and backwards as far as it will allow, this rotates the wheel boxes forward then up out of the engine bay.

Hope it helps

Thanks Hugh, I got to it again this morning and that worked a treat. Problem then was Id damaged the thread on one of the wheel boxes after cutting the nuts off, so it was pretty much useless. Another trip to the Mini graveyard and I got a couple of wheel boxes, two good condition nuts, one of the plastic surrounds to replace the one that Id broken, and after much working back and forth, oodles of CRC, WD40 and degreaser. I got two spinning nicely. I think I now have a complete wiper system ready for reinstall :)

But now its out, I'll leave it out until after paint ;)

While I had the wiring harness out of the road I found some more mashed wiring (auto sparky didnt even bother with the wipers so he didnt get to try and locate that particular problem) but happily I repaired the mashed wires and now I will have 2 speed wipers, rather than just the fast speed I had when testing the wiper motor the other day.

Damn its great when a problem is sorted :P

Next, fit the new custom built engine mount bracket for the radiator side of the engine ;)

ok, went to bolt the wipers in today so I could test before putting the bonnet back on, and the bolt holes are about 12mm from the wiper holes. To get it any closer I'd have to force it so much that it will either bend the rod that holds the worm, and/or break the plastic mount things that hold the wheel boxes in the bodywork.

One of the older wiper assemblies I salvaged for parts had that metal rod that holds the first section of the wiper worm already bent... is there a way to get it closer without forcing it to bend or break something?

ie pull it out again and shorten the first section of the wiper worm holder rod? So the wiper motor is closer to the wipers....?

anyone know if I've done something wrong during reinstall?
Otherwise I'll pull them out and shorten that first section of rod/steel pipe... :(

Pull it out again, you will find that the spline of the tube has slipped out of the wheel box. Put it back in and tighten it up. Once done, reinstall, and you will be all good to wipe your windscreen. Backward and Forwards and Backward and Forwards and Backward and Forwards and Backward and Forwards and Backward and Forwards and Backward and Forwards and Backward and Forwards and Backward and Forwards and Backward and Forwards.... you get the idea...

I know bad Dad jokes... i got stop it....

Cheers
