that looks a lot like the snap on scan tool, is that what it is? or is it a special rover scan tool?
with the snap on brand scan tools you just buy the cards and cables that link up to the car you want to scan and away you go.
i'm guessing there are rover cards available

cheers steve

What does the tool actually do, once he sees the problem how does he rectify it?

New cars have self diagnostics which use various sensors around the engine and exhaust to measure all the relevant information. It's like being hooked up to a rolling road all the time/ The computer makes minor adjustments itself to keep the car in tune. But a service computer, as you see i the picture allows the operator to make as many changes to the progaming of the car. They can then be saved and thats the ay the car runs. It's done via a computer now rather tha by spanners and scredrivers. I have heard some of the hard core nerd boy ricers actually have Laptops hooked up to the cars all the time so that they can continually adjust it. Nerds!

Cheers

Aaron

He can use the computer to test whether parts are working correctly, once a problem or something unusual is found, an adjustment or new part is fitted and the test starts again.
The common problem is in the air temperature sensor (for spi's anyway). The engine over compensates with the amount of fuel, and the car either runs too rich or lean, losing power and fuel efficiency.

If Steve is bringing the magic box I doubt I can afford not to go!
But we shall see. Time is running out though.
Is it likly that a rover dealer would have one of these for full sized rovers??

when one of the ARC rally's was in adelaide recently, one of the mitsubishi entrants blew an engine.. the "simply" popped down to a mitsubishi dealer in the city, got a new engine fitted, and setup and tuned the car on the drive back up to the service park....

We have two diagnostic tools.
one hand held... as you saw.
the second one coming soon is more involved using the internet and dialling into england to on line tune and diagnose problems for all rover's

Does any body on the East coast have these Tools??? Just wondering.
Although I know my SPI has more issues than just tunning. I NEED to fiw the valve stem seals. Maybe I should do this before I atempt tunning. If the air temp semsor is a common prob how easy is it to check???

Paul...I have heard that MGs, Landies, Rangies and Rovers use the same system....its probably just a matter of having the correct software load for the device/might even be selectable....so...maybe Morwoods?? has anybody ever asked??...or the MG dealership in Fyshwick...Canberra Star???...

we have discussed this before....they are all probably too [expletive deleted meaning risk averse] to try their diagnostic equipment on a Mini.

hey yeah it is the snap on brand tool, just used the identical tool on craig lowndes old hsv gts road car at trade school today.

i'm guessing that the rover cards and cables are available.

you can't actually use these to tune the car as it where just to diagnose problems and faults in sensors etc.

the laptops that the ricers have been using are for programing the aftermarket computers for their fuel mapping ignition timing etc.

some ECU's are hackable like on the holden genIII with the LS1edit program if you know what you are doing but as far as i know the ones for the mini are not.

to get programable injection and ignition on a mini is aftermarket and big bucks. unless you build your own,
