hi Jill - I have just done this manouver on mine and there's a bit of a trick to it. I found this one by accident, luckily it was farely soon after starting to figure it out.
Imagine - A line running across the car through both wheel boxes. You have to rotate the entire wiper mechanism around this axis.
So - with motor unbolted from firewall and both nuts off the tops of the wheel boxes, rotate the motor assembly forward and up. This rotates the wheel boxes down and forward. Contin ue rotating the motor assembly up and backwards as far as it will allow, this rotates the wheel boxes forward then up out of the engine bay.
Hope it helps

Thanks Hugh, I got to it again this morning and that worked a treat. Problem then was Id damaged the thread on one of the wheel boxes after cutting the nuts off, so it was pretty much useless. Another trip to the Mini graveyard and I got a couple of wheel boxes, two good condition nuts, one of the plastic surrounds to replace the one that Id broken, and after much working back and forth, oodles of CRC, WD40 and degreaser. I got two spinning nicely. I think I now have a complete wiper system ready for reinstall
But now its out, I'll leave it out until after paint
While I had the wiring harness out of the road I found some more mashed wiring (auto sparky didnt even bother with the wipers so he didnt get to try and locate that particular problem) but happily I repaired the mashed wires and now I will have 2 speed wipers, rather than just the fast speed I had when testing the wiper motor the other day.
Damn its great when a problem is sorted
Next, fit the new custom built engine mount bracket for the radiator side of the engine
