Been looking around for some half decent acrylic paint however I can't seem to find the ones suggest to use (PPG or another brand from auto1). Anyone know where can I find any as I don't have an auto1 anywhere near me.

I readily say that I am not a painter, however I have had many cars painted. The ONLY brand I would suggest is PPG, even if it is a hassle to get, because rectifiying crap paint is more of a hassle.

do ppg have a major selection of acrylic refinishers still though? i dont know ive only dealt with there deltron stuff but i would of thought acrylic was dying as far as the big brands selling it goes. most paints are pretty good now days (again speaking from a 2pac point of view) ive had great success with autothane which is a ppg cheapy brand, i still get a half decent finish out of it and is still glossy after a good 5 years without a polish on the cars ive done.

Yeah, they were good, but their product is now not what it was, it is cheap and that is exactly what it is......

Cant speak for NSW but in Vic I use PPG only. I confess that being a retired old painter eases the way a bit. PPG pulled back from all their retail outlets about 7 to 8 years ago. In Vic we had one distributor but you could always go to the counter which was a side entrance to the building and you could order and pay and pick up whatever you wanted
They have now appointed a retail outlet in Northern suburbs of Melbourne and anybody can get what they want a little easier. I would be suprised if the same hasnt happened in Sydney. I bought 6 litres of colour acrylic recently.
In Melbourne it was Preston Motors at Campbellfield that had the "side door entry operation"
I think it highly unlikely that you will have easy access in non metro areas
You can understand their moove what with fines for polution and the abuse by idiots painting 2 pack in the open air so they closed retail and went direct to panel shops only

Just a few more things . When PPG withdrew from the market a number of small paint companies appeared on the scene . The base material was of an inferior grade to that being used by PPG. Their technology for acrylics lead the world and a lot of this research was done at the old Dulux plant at Clayton Vic. PPG bought Dulux.Their acrylics had a massive advantage over what you can buy now particularly with UV degredation. Their holdout really did slow down chalking and fade , They lost a little ( but so did others) when lead was banned from paints. Reds in particular suffered but their paint remained streets ahead of the others.
There are a few new entrants that have spawned from international paint companies. Ive used DeBeers with great success and this is a little easier to find than PPG
We have an outlet in Bayswater VIc - just walk in off the street and Bobs your uncle
Remember that DeBeers and most others' technology is based on european experience and they dont have the UV issues that Aus has.
Its this very reason we havnt seen water based paint being used in the topcoats of Australian painted cars

Although ppg's 2pak range is extensive, I am almost 100% sure that they still have a good range of acrylics. I only use 2pak at work, but I have seen some acrylics still around.
Another place you could try (dont know if you have one around you at all?) is a TAFE that does spray painting. Nearly all of the stuff that they carry is ppg. At Wetheril Park TAFE the only paint that they have that isnt ppg is their water born paints.
This is an option for everyone who wants to paint at home! Water based paints!! Only problem is that it is a bit richer to buy, and the clear coat is not water born. Not quite developed yet.

gotta make it clear to that water born paints dont just use tap water to thin them down either, you need the special thiners and hardeners, and the clearcoat is best done with 2k stuff so beware if your doing it at home.

Sorry meeni, its a paint that I havent used before, but was told that it is going to lead the way in paints because it was safer, and friendlier than any other paints.
I might research it a little this time!

its safer then 2k, but its almost a bit of a gimmic because it still uses chemicals etc.. we dont use it either yet because its more expensive and still requires proper clearcoat so its almost pointless

micowen is right:ppg still offer a good range of accrylic tinters but it is getting harder and harder to source them. . I believe as I said before the lead based tinters have gone but I heard that its still possible to have your friendly supplier send samples to ppg for annalysis and they will offer an alternative formular to your retailer . Its unlikely to match exactly and you will need a range of tinters to colour match . Your retailer will do this for a price and there will be a charge for ppg time
Around the traps at Ballarat swap I heard that ppg had swallowed up Protech.
Can any one confirm if its true?
Also heard that when panel shops order tinters ( acrylic) that often they are not supplied and there is no indication of availability Reason given was that pigments are going into 2K - acrylic demand is falling and they are simply not making some acrylic tinters
It can only get harder and harder for the home painter and no doubt that one day acrylic will go the way of nitrocelluose,
