Am going to sandblast many engine parts, and prep the block and head nicley.

i plan on painting the block and head the same colour and the box and clutch housings bright aluminium etc.

what are some hints and tips on painting the engine?

should i brush paint the block and head, and spray paint the box, housings and parts?

is it easier to paint the block without the head on, just mask it all up and spray it?

what are some experiences you have had with different brands? should i spray it only or use some brushing aswell?

Would using a clear cost over the engine enamel give the paint a better gloss?

Matt Read showed me some parts the other day that had been prepared really well. You could check with him about the process. They looked too good to paint. In fact I think I'd just clear coat them.

Matt pointed out that you could touch the parts and not leave a fingerprint.

The question I'd be asking is if you can get a high temp clear coat?

I'm kind of tempted when I do mine to keep it natural and clear coat the engine. Or give it an aluminium finish and then clear coat.

best to do it assembled - stick bits of tape over the mating surfaces and bits of rag down the holes

I always spray my engines with cheap stuff from supercrap or wherever, a coat of good etch primer, and a coat of colour and it's done. The only time it comes off is when the block goes in the hot dip tank at the reconditioners

I did my block/box/clutch housing in 2 Pac, put an etch on first. It dosnt need a clear to be glossy.

I have always sprayed mine when fully assembles also.

last few have been painted same colour as the car, been doing it in 2 pac and it is super glossy and does not go dull or look crap after a few years either.

yeah dg 2pac is the way to go.. but try to put as little on as possible, over thin it etc.. ive heard of cars overheating because too much paint wont allow the metal to breathe.. (i havnt seen it happen though) dont worry so much about heat proof paint.. most stuff will work fine.. especially 2pac. and if you can get away with it, paint the main engine assembled, ie, head, gearbox etc.. just makes it easier and you wont mark it when assembling the engine..

I simply covered all the holes, sandblasted it then spray painted it with engine spray paint (I can't remember the brand) but it was very simple and easy.

Still undecided on if i go for the goldy green above, or the darker morris green colour.

that's actually the reason why there is such a thing as "engine paint", it's not especially high temperature safe, but has relly good thermal properties

I couldn't recommend POR15 Engine Enamel highly enough It has great coverage, doesn't need priming and is verrry glossy

I don't have a fantastic shot of the block but the rocker cover should give you an idea of the finish (2 coats) ---

I decided to go black (enamel). The gearbox and wok cover was badly marked and painted in a generic wheel silver enamel.

If you are just painting the block then a paint brush will do fine (the block surface is rough). People say a black engine hides the oil leaks but if I did mine again I wouldn't go black!

Give some thought to other colours in the engine bay -plug leads, wiring, hoses etc. Just a tip - when the engine looks good it makes everything else look bad and pretty soon all the bits need to be freshened up to make the whole engine bay standout.

I cant say that I have any overheating issues with mine. The block/head/box were bare when I sprayed them. But after 10,000 miles the paint is still holding up really well!!!
