OK so my Rover STILL does not start. Following a slight electrical problem, she has sat in the garage for 2 months now, but its time to give her focus.

The electrical problem has now been fixed (4 inches of bunred out wire replaced ) and now she tries to kick over but whirs and whirs like she has a flat battery. The following has been attempted:

1. Jump start using another car - no luck
2. Replace battery with battery from another car - no luck
3. Remove battery earth, sand, clean, replace for better earth - no luck
4. Check position of gear selector (automatic) to ensure Park or Neutral engaged and not preventing starting - no luck
5. Leads removed and ends dried - no luck
6. Dizzy cap removed, dried, points sanded and cleaned - no luck
7. Fuses all checked - no luck
8. Fuel topped up - no luck
9. Fuel lead into engine bay pulled out of engine to check fuel pump is working - although i did manage to get fuel everywhere - no luck
10. Scolded her - no luck
11. Cursed her - no luck
12. Threated her that if she didnt start i would pull her to pieces - no luck
13. Removed bonnet to make her think i was serious - no luck
14. Removed air filter and cleaned and left cover off in case wasnt getting enough air in for some reason - no luck
15. Left her for a while, enjoyed some time with my Moke, came back and said sorry, put her air filter back on and bonnet back on - no luck
16. Spark plugs removed to check for fouling and then cleaned and replaced- no luck

I am now at the end of my patience and at the end of the list of what i think could possibly be wrong....

Any ideas.... anyone???

Arn't these fitted with computers. ???? Something twigs in the back of my mind that there is an electric cut-out in the electronics in case of an accident and needs to be reset for it to start.

Download the manual and check that.

Somebody else mentioned that after their car had been in an accident and couldn't be made to start.

OK just checked the manual I have and it talks about the computer for Turbo only and only tells you how to disconnect it and reconnect it.

If it has points in the dissy then it isn't an injected model - so not the fuel cutoff inertia switch (your point 9. confirms that )

What was the wire that burnt out? Assuming the car was running OK before this then it probably has something to do with this problem now so knowing this could steer us all in the right diagnostic direction.

It was one of the wires that connected to the main terminal of the starter motor solenoid. I believe it was a brown one (however as it melted i am not sure. There were two wires in the harness that connected to one and then this one wire connected to a second wire (from the ignition coil) at the terminal. So two wires, into one - the one that melted - which joined a third single wire at the solenoid.

(if you can see me flapping my arms about trying to explain this you might understand better...)

Try another starter motor, I have one here that will fit your mini if you want to try it.

If it was me I would pull all the spark plugs out and turn the engine over and see if the starter motor turns over at normal speed………..with no compression and starter turns the engine over with out a problem then I say it more than likely the battery……….if nothing changes I’d say your starter is buggerd….or wiring.
Then I would put the plugs back in and put your jumper leads directly on the starter motor and jump of another car…….just have the other car running…….if the starter on the mini still doesn’t turn properly then I’d say the starter is stuffed….and wiring ok……when I say jumper leads directly on the starter I mean try and use the leads to turn the starter motor over not the ignition key of the mini.

I had the same problem on my bj 40 series landcruiser……….starter just turning the motor over……..checked over every thing and ended up going to auto sparky………..he reckon me regulator was stuffed put a new one in and drove off…………went to start the car again same bloody thing …….spent two days going over every thing……….end up thinking the starter motor was stuffed……down the wreckers and got another……even checked it there……….put the bloody thing on and still the same ………don’t know what made look but pulled my old starter apart………..yep Toyota run four brush on their landcruiser starters…………two of the brush longer
So when they wear down they run at half speed……….pulled the starter I got from the wreckers and the same bloody thing…….what are the odds hey…..any way just built one out of the two.

Done this a couple of times for mates when starters stoped working, found dust, grease stop the carbon brushes to move forward when they wear…….tend to pull the starter apart and clean them up and off they go……..

If the engine turns it can not be the solenoid. The Solenoid is what makes the starter engage and switches to power to the starter motor on, so it will turn. This guy is saying the starter turns the engine but engine does not fire. Does the engine turn over at a decent speed when cranking ?
