The bracing has rusted a little bit where it joins the bonnet skin & is no longer attached at this point. Rather than having to get in between the cracks, could I just take out the bracing & use a set of four bonnet pins to hold it in place?

Just my opinion mate but it will look KAK id rather get another bonnet or repair the one youve got, those bonnet pins are a dated accessory these days, but its your car so you can do as you want :D

So you want to remove the bracing and leave it as a single sheet of metal right?

IMO if you did this it would become really flimsy and buckle the first time someone lent on it. It sounds a bit dodgy to me.

It would buckle going on the highway.
And supporting it at 4 corners wont help rigidity, just mean it cant fly off.

You will end up with a nice crease in it.

Fix it or get a new one. Clubman bonnets are still really cheap and plentiful.

The big problem with a lift off bonnet is where do you sit the thing when you are working under the bonnet. (on a windy day on the side of a freeway!)
Then you always end up chipping the paint on the corners when you sit it down.
Then the bonnet pins get rusty and look bad. (don't even think of using aluminium pins, they are not strong enough)

everyone uses aluminium pins (the new style pins have plastic holders) first thing i did with my race car was remove that bracing.. it wont do anything unless you want to stand on it.. makes it heaps lighter aswell..

CAMS used to have a ban on aluminium pins. I wonder if they still do? It came after a few bonnets landed in the crowd.

Make sure you get the pins that come with the free Bee Gees CD and make sure you put bad taste murals all over the bonnet like flash gordon scenes with planets or ....yeah, Dragons n sh1t   and wear flares
