thanks doc, ill look for that brand stick. I dont want to spend heaps of cash, and i just want to get the job done to pass rego, at this stage im not hugely fussed on how good it looks.

im pressed for time on the space i have, so im trying to get as much done as possible as quickly as possible. I could take the whole car to a panel beaters, but ill do that later as it will cost a fair bit, and theres a bit more work than the floor pans.

Stick em loose in the oven at 150C for 30 mins or more to dry out. You may be surprised at the difference it makes.
Seriously though, I find the WIA 12Ps great. They strike easy, run smooth and are fine for out of position work too.

But having said that, stick welding is pretty poor on 1.6mm thickness or less, compared to MIG. It won't make strawberry jam out of pigsh!t.

is the heat going to melt the edge of the steel.

at this stage if its just going to put a big bead along the edge ill angle grind it back, get someone to clean it up later.

for cost/time the other option for me is to hire one from the tool hire place.

Stick welding gives wider penetration than MIG does, yes it'll melt the edges of the steel. If it's not melted, technically it's not a weld.

i understand that, but is it going to be too hot and melt too much away.

for the floorpan and other general purpose im taking it with a little skill using a stick its will be suitable.

I would practice on some scrap thin sheet first. Stick welding sheet metal is an acquired art...
