When I first got my Mini back in 1995, I would notice at least 2 to 3 Minis per week. Of course nowadays (in Sydney) its down to once a fortnight.

My question is this:

Why are old VWs more prevalent on the streets when compared to the classic Mini? Could this be attributed to sheer numbers when new back in the 60s and 70s, or is it that Minis dont last as well as VWs?

Interesting question.

There's probably less inside a Beetle to go wrong, I suppose! And in terms of absolute numbers, weren't there more of them sold?

It's the opposite over here in WA.
I see far more minis (a couple a week) compared to veedubs (maybe once a fortnight).

Selection bias?

I mean I can id a mini just from the rear quarter, but it would take a convoy of VW bugs for me to even notice them

I seem to see more kombis.... probably 'cause I find them more interesting...

cheers

Jacob

Reminds me of a Confidential BMC salesman's document I have in my collection that was used to favourably compare the Morris 850 against the VW 1200. I'll dig it out and post the 8 page if people are interested?

At the risk of being flamed....

Beetles stand up to abuse and poor maintenance better than Minis. It's not uncommon for Beetles to do 300,000km on one engine. Few Minis manage that milestone.

Also, when they do go wrong Beetles are very easy to fix. I find mine more forgiving as a daily car than a Mini.

Maybe there are more classic Beetles in daily use than classic Minis?

To prove I'm not all bad, if I had to make a choice my Beetle would go before my Traveller or Moke. But I do like my Beetle.

It's because they're slightly bigger, and therefore easier to see...

Proof that the "hard sell" is nothing new.

Winabbey that's a great document. How did you get it?

Am not sure if Pedr Davis mentioned this in his write ups.

Should send a pdf of the documents to some of the VW car clubs just to stir some crap - see how they react!!!
