I know how you guys love to know about every move I make.

I just drove the mini home. Its a 35 minute drive in traffic. It is only 15 ks...

It only got to 80 degree's just as I got home. I had the therom fan blasting all the way home.

I am going to pull the rad and get it completely flushed out. It only got rodded last time so i hear that that is crappy.
Alloy chinese rads are calling my name!!

Has your car got a by-pass hose? If not then before you spend money on cleaning or replacing the radiator try drilling a small hole in the thermostat - something about 6mm should do it.

Let me get this right - you're freaking out 'cause it gets to 90 deg C??

You know there have been production cars in the would that have a 99 deg C thermostat, right?

Honestly, unless it's going over 100 C and is definitely boiling, you have nothing to worry about.

Cheers

Jacob

Hi vulcan,
No I am freaking out because at 90 degree's the rad is purging water from the rad like it it going out of fashion and blowing steam out of the cap like a kettle. I am also trying to work out why when the gauge reads 90 the temp is a lot hotter in the radiator. I think this as it is boiling in the rad and also the thermo fan switch kicks in a lot earlier than it should if the temp gauge as correct.
Sorry, im not that smart at the engine side of things but trying to learn.

If it's not boiling in the block, then it can't boil in the rad.

First thing you need to sort out is the accuracy of your temp gauge - electric (guess-o-meter) or mechanical/capillary type? In any case get the temp sender out of the head & drop it into some just boiled & still very hot water - the gauge should get close to 100.

Once you have verified that your gauge is telling you the right thing, then you can chase cooling issues... otherwise you're just chasing your tail...

cheers

Jacob

If you temp gauge isn't an electric one it may need to be re gassed, I got fed up with mine and put an electric in..

Might be a stupid question but have you replaced the headgasket yourself?
I have heard of many accounts where people put heaps of gasket glue on and it blocks up the water channels

I agree Jacob,

As mentioned in an earlier post, I am borrowing a laser thermometer on the weekend to test this.

Thanks for your advice.

Hey Mike,

I did it with an other ausmini person who actually knows what they are doing. No gasket goo was used

Hi,
If the temp gauge is correct (80-90 C)and water/steam coming out of radiator; my money on the radiator cap.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? I have a similar problem and just can't seem to nut out where the issue lies.

Cheers
